LS1 to LS6 swap

Whats needed for this project?

New knock sensors? things like that? since its not a LS3 or other motor, I can reuse everything?

Thanks for any help/insight

SamhainZ28 10-15-2008 12:53 AM

use the search on ls1tech fool

SamhainZ28 10-15-2008 12:56 AM

...and where did you get an ls6?

Mike 10-15-2008 01:37 AM

unbolt one, bolt in the other, get a tune

NJ Torque 10-19-2008 09:01 PM

I mean, I can get a new LS6 for 3400 with a warranty... why not put that in the car rather then rebuild the LS1?

BonzoHansen 10-19-2008 10:24 PM

isn't the difference basically just a cam & intake?

Yeah, they were rated @ 405 HP. Had a larger cam, better flowing heads, the LS6 style intake, different oil pump

for 3400 dollars you could have much more than an ls6 would offer, you mention picking it partly because of the warrenty, but that would be void if you put in a cam

to swap in a stock ls6 your talking spending 3400 dollars on MAYBE 60 more wheel horsepower. it would make more sense to freshen up your bottom end, do a head and cam package and pocket the rest of the cash

I know I could do that. the fact of having a motor sitting ready to swing in is a big plus for me. rather then waiting a month for a machine shop. Eh, its a long way off. Still with a stock 4l60e and ten bolt....

So you have plenty of time to find a used engine and do the work to that one and have it ready for a swap. If you keep your eyes out for a used long or short block you can pick one up pretty cheap, or like Bonzo Keeps telling me you can get a complete 5.3 for really good prices

The first year LS6 was rated at 385 I believe.

blocks are different too, in most cases. in 2001 15% of the f bodies had the "ls6" block and in 2002 25% had them. In my SS i had a "LS6" block originally.

I'll be the first to admit it though Chris, you'd save money building what you have. Or maybe get a cheap LS1 and mod it while you still have your motor in the car.

Only reason I have this motor is I was made a deal I couldn't refuse. I just like the streetability of the LS6 as opposed to a cammed out LS1. But as long as you don't go too crazy you should be fine.

Been thinking and I dunno actually, I may be wrong here. Someone jump in here and correct me if I'm wrong. I'm curious too, because I'm sure cheaper is out there, but is it worth it?

A good H/C setup, including upgraded valvetrain would probably run about $2500 on average...you figure $1500-2000 for good heads, $600-750 for the cam/valvetrain. That's almost LS6 territory on its own.

Then if you wanted to freshen up the shortblock you'd be looking at something like $700-1000 for stock internals or $1500 for really sick forged parts. Figure $200 for all the gaskets/hardware you'd need, cause for that money I wouldn't take a chance reusing ANYTHING. Then you'd want an LS6 oil pump, they're cheap but still like $130 or so I believe. Then you have to rip it all apart and build it...fun, yea, but tedious.

Or, at 3400, you get the LS6 and just plug & play. Aside from the throttle body and I think oil pan they're basically the exact same thing externally. You get a motor built by GM professionals with a warranty and everything. And skip the cam if you do it...trust me you won't need it.

Yea 2001...I just got into an argument with the manager at the toyota dealer where Pat (SupermanX24) works. Apparently the guy "owns 4 vettes" and he swears to me the 01 they have was rated at 405. They want $17.9k, I felt like saying, "I'll tell you what...if I'm wrong I'll buy the car for $18k cash, if I'm right give me the car for $15k and I'll finance it right now."
