ls head swap and cam question

ok im planning on doing a heads and cam package on my 98z this spring. i just got a great deal on a set of 5.3L 706 heads i was just wondering what the max lift i would be able to do with them heads on a stock ls1 bottom end so that way i know my options for a cam.

not too sure, depends on springs, RRs, and PRs. I've gone as high as .645 on comp springs. not too sure before you run into issues.

should i be fine if i say under .590s

Max lift has a lot to do with the way the cam is timed, both cut and install. There is no one absolute answer.

Whatever you do, look at more than just one aspect of the cam to get what you need. Lift is only one part of the puzzle, duration, lobe sep, and advance/retard play major factors as well.

Tim Pretty much nailed it. Its all about PTV clearance also when the heads are off it needs to be checked. Depending on cam choice you may need to fly cut

emolineaux 11-09-2008 05:32 PM

fly cut?

Stock ls1 pistons have no valve relifes. in you need more ptv clearance you will need to fly cut the pistons making valve relifes in them

it means cutting in eyebrows into ur pistons to allow for the valves to clear. this requires taking the engine completely apart. depending on what type of power u would like to make, u may not need to cut them at all. explain ur goal and we can help u further.

im not looking for anything crazy out of my z right now, just want to give her a little more life. i bought a set of 5.3 heads off ebay but the owner said he found a crack in one of them so he refunded my money. so im just going to keep my stock 241s maybe try to find another set to port them out. but i would like a cam. nothing to big. this is my daily driver that i would like to run in the mid 12s. the engine only has about 7500 miles on it so i figured right now would be the best time for a cam swap. this spring i plan on putting long tubes on it also.

i would like a somewhat choppy cam if possible. i love the sound of them.

well that being said, a cam and spring swap in this case will be quite easy. no cutting required.
when ur ready to do this, if u like of course, contact me or mc73nova and we would be glad to design u a custom grind cam and provide u with anything else needed. even if u need an install or porting. p.s. i dont use shelf cams, blahh!
