DHL Stopping Air and Ground In USA;9,500 Jobs Cut

http://money.cnn.com/2008/11/10/news...n=money_latest

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Global delivery company DHL announced Monday that it was cutting 9,500 jobs as it discontinues air and ground operations within the United States.

DHL said its DHL Express will continue to operate between the United States and other nations. But the company said it was dropping "domestic-only" air and ground services within the United States by Jan. 30 "to minimize future uncertainties."

DHL's 9,500 job cuts are on top of 5,400 job reductions announced earlier this year. After these job losses, between 3,000 and 4,000 employees will remain at DHL's U.S. operations, the company said.

The company also said it was shutting down all ground hubs and reducing its number of stations to 103 from 412.

DHL said it was making the cuts to improve profitability and "to prepare the company for the economic challenges ahead."

Yeah. I expect Ron 98tadriver to post up in celebration. I remember them jacking him around about a transmission.

Hear the casinos are planning layoffs due to losses as well. Reported this is their worst in years.

DHL was the worst when it came to shipping. Didn't they do this a few years ago as well?

I thought the same thing. They owe him a T56.

My brothers father in law said this was coming, he works for DHL .....................for now.

Knipps 11-10-2008 05:11 PM

Who couldn't see something like this coming as soon as they gave up a bunch of their biz to UPS

camaroAL 11-10-2008 07:53 PM

it sucks for the workers, but the company as a whole treated the employees like crap, not to mention that they were completely un-organized. i sent package after package next day through my father in-law and they showed up a week to 2 weeks later, my customers were real happy as u can imagine.

maybe if they didn't hire drivers and buy trucks to drive around empty to try and look like they were everywhere and spent that money on customer service and reliability they wouldn't be in the position they are in.

It's true DHL is officially gone.

Prices were good but you stood a good chance of your stuff getting lost or damaged.

Makes my job all the more secure... posting this from fedex ground as I wait for my ride home to finish up

They always operated at a loss here, but since they're backed by one of the, if not the largest bank in Switzerland they never really cared... guess that outlook got challenged now. What does kinda suck is that people who left fedex to go to dhl apparantly are not allowed back under any circumstances... and I personally know one guy who did that (at the time it was definately in his best interest), and he left ups for fedex... wonder what he's gonna do now

Knipps 11-25-2008 01:09 AM

wait, you're leaving fed ex waiting for a ride home when the guy you know left ups for fed ex and you're not sure if he can get a job with who?
he didn't leave fed ex for dhl..

Savage_Messiah 11-25-2008 01:13 AM

When did I ever say or hint that the two were the same person?

Knipps 11-25-2008 01:16 AM

you said you know one guy who did that, implying he left fedex for DHL

Savage_Messiah 11-25-2008 01:39 AM

You're assuming I only know one person where I work???

Knipps 11-25-2008 08:38 AM

 No. It's just how phrased it.

edit:: Kasey, I'm not talking about the person who came to pick you up.
