clunking noise

how bad do driveshaft u joints go bad? my car made a slight clunk for past few weeks....today it got bad. after thinking it was the tranny mount and replacing it with a nice energy suspension one...it still makes the noise.

i talked to my stepdad (former mechanic) and he thinks its either the driveshaft u joint or my rear is done (posi or ring and pinon are out). the sound doesnt really sound like its coming from the rear...more the middle of the car/back of trans.

from a stop in first gear it really wont make any noise unless you get on it, and if you let off it will clunk. and if your cruising on the highway like in 5th or 6th, and have your foot off the gas and press the clutch in, it will make noise when it re-engages. and when you hit the brakes to come to a stop or in reverse it will clunk a little

Check the Transmission mount first. Much more common failure than a U-joint. Remember, always start by looking at the less expensive parts and go from there. It will save you a lot of money and aggravation.

loose/bad torque arm mount?

sweetbmxrider 11-14-2008 09:28 PM

and it was doing it before you messed with the brakes? when u joints get real bad they vibrate at certain speeds. it can make a squeak/clunk when you accelerate. look at the u joints for grease pushing past the cap seals. maybe get it in the air and have a friend rev it or power brake it and see if the tranny or motor are moving significantly. definitely look over the rear suspension goodies too. peak at the exhaust as well.

My car the the rear brakes came lose where they bolt to the axles made a clunk. kinda scary when i checked it out they where only on by a couple threads. If they came lose the axles would of came out. If you can grab the brakes and move them take the rotors off and check that. Also check the ujoint bolts mine where lose and i didnt know that until i replaced the pinion seal. Good luck findng it

Stock Torque arm mount for the loss...

check your trans output bearing. mine is worn and loose, i can take the driveshaft and shake it up and down like crazy in the tailshaft.
