Exhibition of Speed
I saw this on another web site. Has anyone ever heard or received a ticket for exhibition of speed in NJ?
http://www.pro-touring.com/forum/showthread.php?t=49923 Basically this guy doesn't light up the tires but accelerates quickly, in control, and doesn't breach the speed limit. Cop pulls him over and give him a ticket for exhibition of speed with the posibility of suspended for 1 yr.. So how is it enforceable? If it's just the cops opinion that he took off too quickly. |
Hahah my friend got one like that for doing a sweet ass burnout in a bonneville.
|
I was threatened with one of those because I left my HS too quick one day :rollseye:
|
Well ill get it out of the way so none of the other idiots who normally post this do....
all law enforcement personnel are dicks and are just out to get you etc. :shifty: In all reality its up to the individual police officer to give the ticket and make the choice. I did not read the link but who knows how fast the guy really took off or if he did chirp his tires . Do I think you should be able to get a ticket for taking off from a light fast as long as you arent speeding or spinning.... No but I'm not everyone |
police are really given wide discretion when writing tickets, as not every situation has a statute. i've had exhibition of speed tickets, but that was usually for lighting them up or really getting on it with a slight chirp from second to third. sounds to me like the cop didn't know what else to write, so he wrote exhibition of speed.
it's a shame, but people usually react like this one did when the cop asked him what he was doing. i would've said, i'm running errand for my wife. no need to admit you've done something wrong before ever getting to court. i would never say "not using my head, i guess." |
i got that brought up on my little escapade on the NJ turnpike, i dropped from 6th to 4th and went all out. redlined 4th, hammered 5th, up to 127. cop was right behind me before i started. but no, ive never recieved it, that night i just got a warning for speeding and a ticket for illegal use of the HOV lane.
in my case, the term was exhibition of acceleration. that night i also heard careless, reckless, racing on a highway, speeding(duh), reckless endangerment, fleeing from police... |
ive gotten an exhibition of speed ticket in california. the cop was being nice. instead of writing me a ticket for street racing and impounding my car he wrote me a lesser ticket. exhibition of speed as i understand it, i asked the cop when i got it, is a ticket for those with fast cars trying to skirt the law. its for those that like to floor their cars and stop accelerating at the speed limit.
its a vague law but it sounds like theres more to this story. it also doesnt help to have a loud car. |

Who knows what really happened, but I don't see anything wrong with getting up to the speed limit fast from a red light. If it was green you would already be going through the intersection at the speed limit.
Burning out is totally different and deserves a ticket. If you do a good enough one it will impare others vision and is unsafe. |
imagine a woman sitting about to pull out and make a right. she looks down the road and sees the light just turns green and decides she has enough time to pull out into the road in her metro...
imagine sitting at a redlight waiting with your foot light on the clutch, shifter already in first gear. light hits green. you take off half pedal, no chirps, and shift through second and slam the gas to get up to speed... people rely on the speed limit when judging when to pull out and when not to. or imagine while your tearing ass up to the speed limit and a ball comes rolling out into the street and a small child darts out into traffic. lots of variables. thats why if your gonna speed, your gonna speed. eff it. |

If he didn't speed he couldn't have exhibited speed. Seems like basic logic to me.
Florida has gotten much much more strict about things relating to street racing since the Nick Hogan thing, but this sounds like they are going too far. In his shoes, I would lawyer up and get after it. -Tim |
i got an exhibition of horsepower ticket a long time ago doing a burnout at the square in newton

i would frame that ticket. |

"If your gonna speed, your gonna speed. eff it." Not a very intelligent statement. If the speed limit is 50mph and I go as fast as I can from 0-50 I am still only going to be doing the speed limit and would not be speeding. Doing 100mph is speeding anytime of the day whether you are weaving like a moron on a highway or doing it at 2 in the morning thinking that you are the only one on the road. |

anticipating another driver's move is a rough way to drive. expect everyone to hit you.
i got a careless for doing a "burnout" at 30 mph, dry pavement. ****in slp loud mouth. |
You two mean to tell me that you never once pull out into traffic thinking about if you can make it before the oncoming traffic hits?

If someone pulls out in front of moving traffic in a 55 zone and fails to compensate for how fast I get to 55, then it is still their fault for not leaving themselves enough space to accelerate up to the appropriate pace to merge. -Tim |
Pass on a double solid? is that what your question is?
|
also known as the "accordion effect": when the traffic slows, everyone bunches up, following closely behind the person in front of them. then, once traffic opens up again, the distance between cars increases. watching it from a helicopter really puts those "spots" in perspective. and an accident is even worse, since both directions of traffic slow down to "rubber-neck" and see what's going on.
btw, anticipating the other driver's course of action is called defensive driving. imagine the worst possible thing that any driver on the road might be able to do and you'll end up on the receiving end of an accident that much less. no one can prepare for or avoid getting hit from behind. that has to be the worst feeling in the world... |

so if you dont anticipate another drivers intentions how do you get anywhere?
some of our vehicles can accelerate at very high rates of speed so the law enforcement went out and made a ticket for this ''loophole''. |
i found out i can smoke my tires at 65mph in 3rd.... scared the hell outta the civic who reved at me. hehe.
i wonder what that ticket would have been... |
