Pretty sure my question remains unanswered.....

There are security patches that keep your email and other forum information protected as well as some new features that we will be adding that were not available under the previous version of the forum software.

Think of it this way, if it wasn't needed or useful, Justin would not have given up a night during the holidays that he could have spent with his wife and kid to get the updates done.
