Cam Opinions
Everyone seems to have the same goal of building a budget H/C setup with street manners, looking for 400hp/400tq to the wheels, blah, blah...
Most of the time, that goal is unrealistic. My question is what in your opinion is the breaking point of streetable cam size? Also...disregard emissions, and assume necessary bolt ons stall/gears, stock displacement. |
400/400 is fairly easy with just a cam in an LS1.Streetable is a relative term though. A good rule of thumb is anything in the 220-230 range will be very easy on the street with a cam in the 230-235 range still fairl tame. Anything over that will start to get grumpy. teh T/R 224/224 114LSA cam is proably one of the best power makers with easy to live with manners.

I also agree that the tr224 is a great power street cam, and on a 114 LSA it could pass emissions with a good tune. More opinions? |
224 Cam with 5.3 heads.
Breakign point? I've seen 224 cams unstreetable due to their tunes... or cams much bigger do better too. |

I dont think he is worried about emissions. the TR224 on a 112 would probably cause issues, I haven't seen many problems with the 114. However you won't get 400 with just the 224 (Very close though). The GMPP LS1 hot cam will get you there but emissions will be screwed. Another option is a cam like the TR 224 and a set of LS6 heads (which are cheap enough now) will get you past there also. what kinda budget you looking at?

I was more interested in a discussion/opinions of streetable cams than help to piece together a build. I still need a converter and tune before I line up my cam build unless I do it all at once. Right now Im looking at looking at the 5.3L heads and either a 228r or PredZ spec cam (230/230 .612 .588 on a 111). The 228r would have better manners, but the later will have more power under the curve |
I run a 230/236 112lsa cam and my car has great street manners after I found a good tuner. its all in the tune. I've seen 240 dur. cams tuned well enough to have good DD street manners.

TR224 and 243 heads were what I was gonna do for a similar goal (and considering 243s can be grabbed for cheap on forums, it helps with the "budget" end of it all). I was halfway there. The driveability with the TR224 is great, but agreed a lot of tuning a big cam is in the tune.
How you enjoying that PHB :D -J |

With LS1'sit is so much about tuning. The design of the Gen 3 small block can eat up huge amounts of cam and drive great as long as the tuning is right. Look at DemonicBird's car, he has a huge cam and he has no problems driving it around.

Its also personal preference.
