Oil pump???
I just dropped oil pan on my camaro cuz the gasket was leaking.
so the question is: should I change oil pump while I'm in there. And what should I get? do I need anything more than oem on stock engine? the car is 96 lt1 w/ 125k mi on it. Thanks! Alex. |
while the pan is off. change it why not? your already in there. with 125k it would be a wise investment. it could last. and it may not. so why not replace it. i only had 97000 on my dakota. and the pump went. as for oem. i dont see you needing anything more. unless you plan on adding power upgrades, and racing it. then maybe you might want a high performance high flow pump.

Definitley change it if you can.
I would add something better. LT1 have a bit low oil pressure. With a stock pan you want to stay away from the real DH/high volume units, don't want to risk sucking the pan dry, but there are units that are slightly better then stock that will give you a touch better oil pressure. A) You can use a stock pump but install the GM white spring. This will give you a bit more pressure. * Note that although GM list it as 70 PSI, you most likely aren't going to see that high a pressure with the miles you have on the car. Below is the into on the GM White spring: Oil Pump Spring (3848911) Oil Pressure in small-block and V6/90º Chevrolet engines is regulated by a spring in the oil pump cover. This spring (color-coded white) produces approximately 70 psi oil pressure. Small Image Technical Notes: Used in high-performance oil pump P/N 3848907. Minimum recommended oil pressure for off-highway use is 65 psi at engine operating speed. GM LIST: $3.91 GM Parts Direct: $2.32 + S&H B) Look into a Melling SELECT M155 pump (not the 155HV, that's too much for a stock pan ). they make two versions, the SELECT is an upgraded unit. Make sure you get the pump that matches your pickup tube size, 95/96 GM switched. |
Thanks A lot for the info!

Ditto on the warning regarding Melling. Their regular M55 comes with a "not for performance use" warning in the box since the body of the pump can crack and split.

yeah! I saw that warning on-line..
Thank you! Alex. |
