Blown Engine!?!?!?!?

Hey Guys my name is Matt and I just got my first domestic sports car (2000 Trans AM WS6) and within 5 months the engine is now done.

The car was tuned over at TTP for 375hp 375tq and I also had to put $1300 in work at the same time... It was driving great... then on friday I heard loud clanking coming form the engine so i go it towed back to TTP... They think it's a cracked rod but can't be sure.

I'm either going to sell the car as is or get a used engine.

Does anyone have or know of anyone who has a LS1 forsale(not too expensive)? If so I would appreciate it.

Let me know what you would do in my situation. I really would just replace the engine and sell it at this point.

Thanks for your input.

Why not just pull the motor, make repairs and be done?

Check with BonzoHansen

TTP told me that I should just look into getting a used long block... and I can't do that kind of mechanics. They don't know exactly what is wrong with the car and it could be $750 just to find out that we shold have replaced the engine.

LTb1ow 02-16-2009 01:39 PM

Did they do the 1300 dollars of work?

Ktulu990 02-16-2009 01:44 PM

Yeah they did... it was timing cover gasket, timing seal, dipstick o ring, oil pan seal, radiator, slp lid, tune and some other stuff.

LTb1ow 02-16-2009 02:05 PM

Do you know what let go in the engine or are you just going off what TTP says?

Ktulu990 02-16-2009 02:22 PM

yeah i have no idea... just got the news a few mins ago... They think it could be a rod

camaros_4life34 02-16-2009 03:43 PM

They crack right before they break in half, no? LOL

Remember guys, the OP said he is not overly technical, and from being in the business I know talking to a customer can sometimes like playing the telephone game. The message can get a bit scrambled.

its a 'clanking' noise? coming from the top end of the motor or bottom end

Agreed, but I just can't see how a clanking noise can equate to a totalled engine. Nor can I see how a rebuild would be less economical than buying a new shortblock....

He's not asking about a new one....he's asking about used. And you can easily buy a used LS1 cheaper than you'll pay a shop to tear down and rebuild your existing engine, usually with less downtime too.

I think it was coming from the bottom end... it was very loud... ttp checked the rockers, valves and spings and said they were good... they also looked at the pistons with a scope or something like that....

If they did all that and said it's something in the engine that I'm have to agree that's it's probably pretty serious. Since you only owned the car a short time it's impossible to know how well maintained the car was or even beaten on.

Sounds to me ( my opinion ), they are quoting you a price to pull the motor and inspect it, and that can involve allot of time and effort. Since the engine is stock, finding another to drop in would be your most cost effect way to go. Unless you wanted to keep the car...

Also, I'm not aware of broken rods being common, but what TTP is probably referring to ( again, I'm guessing ) is that the rod bolts stretched or the cap area cracked. If it did, it more then likely damaged the crank. pretty rare you hurt a rod/bearing and not do some amount of damage to the crank.

Cool thanks... yeah I'm deciding what I want to do... I had someone offer to do a swap for me for $500. Now I need to find a good engine for a good price.

BonzoHansen 02-17-2009 11:52 AM

My offer still stands

Ktulu990 02-17-2009 11:57 AM

I think it's a little more then I'm trying to spend... I might be interested in just a long block
