this problem erks me can anyone tell me what it is
i have an 87 iroc with pretty much aftermarket everything. when i turn the wheel wayyy to the left or wayyyy to the right the rpm dips down alot and the car feels like its going to stall if i dont give it gas. im taking it that its not normal, but can anyone point me in the right direction as to what it is?
thanks in advance Jon |
it might be just the steering pump being under load since your turning it. i see alot of cars do it but not as bad as your describing. for starters, i would check the fluid level in the steering pump to see if it is low or over filled.

^^^yup
EFI or carb? |
carbureated
|
the fluid for the steering pump is right in front of the booster correct?
|
No, that is the brake reservoir. The p/s pump/reservoir is bolted to the front of the engine, should be lower LH side. Check the fluid.
When you load the PS at the end of the range it loads the pump which can be a drag on the engine. EFI can compensate with the IAC but a carb can't. |

If you say so ... lol

maybe the pump is on its way out and is putting more of a load on the car now. it only does it if you are > 5 mph or completely stopped right?

check it and also check the belt deflection. basically pull up and push down on the power steering belt (assuming this is a v-belt, if its a serpentine/one belt just ignore) if it deflects more than roughly 1/2"-3/4" at most, i'd stick a belt on there or adjust the tension.
|
Dude that same thing use to happen with my old edelbrock. Carb needs adjustment when ever I turned hard it wouldnt have enough fuel. When I put the holley on same thing. Im still wondering what that could have been.

Neither one of our cars have chokes but my motor had two bad cylinders so their was a reason why mine did that and its been 5 months since my car has ran. Yours on the other hand probally could use an adjustment.
I was told from John Mazio(from "Ask Franks") that if the motor is set up right timings good and the carb is good even with out the choke I shouldnt have had such a big problem getting it started in the mornings like I was. My problem was bad pistons and crappy wires-yours could be carb adjustment or timing you never know because you bought this car set up from someone else you should really go over everything and dial it all in. |

either the P/S fluid level or the P/S pump itself. if the belt is too loose, wouldn't it will slip on the pulley during steering lock?
|
yeah i don't really know where i was going there. it seems like a combo of different things are probably going on.
