Tire Question
 

Hey guys. Some of you saw me at the track last night and I (along with everyone else) was having serious traction problems. I talked to my sisters boyfriend and he told me not to do a burnout out before the run, because it wont help at all on a street tire. Well the only problem I have with that is, arent you looking for a warm tire so you dont burn? Ive done power brakes off the track before and afrterwards the tires would stick to an ice skating rink! So I was confused. Of course I didnt listen to him and ran a best time of like 14.223 @ 97 spinning all of first and chirping second! I was getting very frustrated because I did 4 runs that were 14.2's and I spun each time. Any suggestions? Is he full of hot air?

i would spin them to get the debris off of the tread. did you lower the rear psi and bump up the front?

John Force style burnouts won't help. Just enough to clean the tires and get them maybe a bit warmer. Just think, you were almost running with the full bolton lt1's of lilredjeep and firebird67dude :P

he is not full of hot air. doing big smokey burnouts on street tires is not good for traction. street tires actually get kinda oily when they get that hot. its okay to spin them real quick, maybe 2 seconds, just to get the dirt and stuff off them.

bmx is right about lowering the rear tire pressures and bumping up the fronts. the higher pressure in the front tires leads to lower rolling resistance (same theory as running skinnies up front). not sure what pressure you should lower the rears to though. maybe 26-28 psi?

Yeah I know I wasnt frustrated with my times, I was just frustrated with the fact that I could have been doing better. The one run in the left lane I spun so badly I had to let off and I ended up with a 15.8 :( Besides that I was pretty consistant.

i usually ran my tires on the track at like 22-24 psi and the fronts like 36-38 psi
a quick spin of the tires to get rid of debris will help. anything more than that can hurt you a bit.





what kind of mods do you have?

Id pump front pressure to just under max pressure, and the rears below 25psi.

At Island and Atco, you should deff spin them a bit to clear the water off along with whatever else is on there.

I only have a Magnaflow Catback, air foil, and slp fan switch for now. However with the new wheels came a bigger tire size. They are now 275 45 17's

There is your problem.... Need sidewall to hook, just as important as the right compound and tempature.

Ah I never thought of that. I have a set of semi sticky tires in the basement on salad shooters. Maybe I should give them a try next time...
