Lowered with long tubes???

Thinking about lowering my 01 z28 1"-1.5" at the most...is that a good idea with long tubes I have Hooker super comps and my y pipe already hangs pretty low I got 17s on 275s all the way around just dont want the y pipe/headers scraping everywhere...thoughts?

sweetbmxrider 03-26-2009 06:40 PM

eh, do you have a cat? you will probably scrape on speed bumps. if you can tuck up the y better i would suggest to. i wouldn't do more than an inch though.

More or less depends on the area you drive in most. I had my car lowered 1.5 in the front and 2 in the back. Once I slapped Pacesetter LT's and ORY on there, it was real bad. I then installed a catted Y and made it even worse. I was dodging potholes, speedbumps, pretty much everything that wasnt a smooth surface. I put stock springs back on and havent looked back since. I'd take sound over ride height anyday.

I truly have a clone of your car. I had the car lowered 1.5 front, 2 rear for about 3 months. I got sick of no ground clearance and crappy traction, and went back to stock springs.

i know saitin's trans am is lowered and he has long tubes and the bottom of his exhaust is kinda dinged in a few spots. its the price you pay to play.

V 03-27-2009 06:58 AM

my 01 ss is probably the lowest out of this group, i have QTP LTs, with off road y pipe. i also have a chassis mounted torque arm. i scrape speedbumps driveways and everything, but i manage, you learn how to work with it. lol

Batman 03-27-2009 10:41 AM

I had that problem when I had QTP's but since I switched to Kooks my D/S loop hngs down lower then the Y-pipe. Admittadly my car isn't lowered but I could easily go down another 1-2 inches with out many issues

ar0ck 03-27-2009 10:44 AM

I've been running Pacesetter LT's & ORY for about 2 years on coil overs and I don't have any issues. The front is a good 1.5+ lower and it rarely scrapes. Its all about how and where you drive. Gotta go at speed bumps on angles, and if its a ridiculously tall one sometimes the collectors scrape.

DevilDougWS6 03-27-2009 01:34 PM

im lowered one inch and it sits perfect. i have lts as well and they will scrape over certain speed bumps. but other than that no problems. the bottom of the front bumper will scrape though if i dont take driveways at an angle.

sweetbmxrider 03-27-2009 03:06 PM

didn't you have a busted y-pipe? unrelated?

JuStAZ28 03-28-2009 06:33 PM

nope not me....but thanks for the input think Im goin to keep it stock height for now.

JL8Jeff 03-28-2009 07:25 PM

My 00 SS is stock eight with longtubes and dual cat y-pipe and I've never hit anything. I have speed bumps at work and some bad potholes and curbs in our area and haven't had a problem. I'd keep it stock height if you go with longtubes.

JuStAZ28 03-29-2009 06:43 AM

yea probably was goin to outback but it was paaacked so said f that lol

creeper 03-29-2009 06:45 PM

i'm lowered about 1.5ish all around with hooker longtubes. i only did the headers like 2 months ago but i haven't scraped yet on the street. only thing i've scraped was a dip to get onto the tracks at a car wash. definitely worth the sound/look.

V 04-09-2009 02:07 PM

finally got on a decent comp, ... for reference... heres my car, pre-LTs. you can see the TQ crossmember almost on the ground...

thats from having the cam and stock motor mounts, cracked the y-pipe, now i have prothane motor mounts, but the cheap y-pipe has been welded so many times, it just keeps cracking.

Mids ftw

My car was lowered 1.5 in., the only bad part was taking speed bumps on an angle, and i had a pretty tricky way of getting up the driveway. It looked awesome though, even on stock wheels. Just be aware that it wont make it over bumps and stuff. I didnt realize it until i screwed up the nose on my driveway when I first got it. After that, I was fine. Other than that, it wheel hopped like a mofo.

lower control arm relocation brackets ftw!

driving in the rain after lowering without them was pretty scary. fun, but scary.

Teds89IROC 04-17-2009 06:25 PM

I have the pro-kit and LT's on the iroc and most places aren't too bad just have to angle it and the worst is the lip of the collector scrapes..as alex said. My car isn't a DD which is why I didn't care too much but for a DD I wouldn't do that combo.
