This is the engine out of my 71 firebird. What is the proper way to get this pulley off so i can get the cover off?

haha, nah i wasn't sure if it was a puller or i could just use a breaker bar or something.

and no i have not does this before but i want to get in to take a peek at the timing chain and possibly replace that if needed.
I went to autozone to see if i could rent one but all the had was a Chrysler/Mitsubishi puller that didnt look large enough even to work. I dont see how a puller is going to work. there is a large bolt in the center, does the pulley slide off or is that bolt holding it on.

The pulley should be bolted to the balancer, three small bolts and a big one in the middle. Once the pulley is off you use the 3 smaller holes that were holding the pulley to the balancer to attach the balancer puller to get it off.

harmonic balancer puller is what u need. kd tools sells one for under 100

Alternatively you can borrow one for free at Autozone.

heres a pic of the motor 71 poncho 400 stock 300hp with E-heads
I'm gonna have it rebuilt and stroked out too a 455 wich is gonna produce around 550-600hp and a whooping 600-650ft torque

impact gun then pull it off with pure might. or hit it with a blcok of wood and hammer carefully

Yea i got it, came off realy easy once i was able to stop the crank from turning.

with a puller or the wood? inquiring minds want to know. i've always put out the bucks for the specialty tool. i figure it gets the job done correctly, usually with out foul-ups, and then i have the tool should i, or a friend, have a need in the future. hell, i even bought a puller to remove my steering wheel. it also doubled as an installer, so i definitely got my money's worth.

no puller needed. the one i picked up from autozone didnt even fit, wasnt large enough.

i took two longer grade8 bolts, threaded then in to two hole next to each other. took a breaker bar and wedged that between those two bolts and had my pop hold it the other way to stop from rotating. I had another breakers bar with socket on the center bold and it broke loose rather easily.

then the pully slid right off after a wack with a rubber hammer.
