NJ Torque 04-04-2009 11:27 PM

maroman88 04-05-2009 01:29 AM

Let alone swapping modded or unmodded PCM's would throw every possible light.

I believe the PCM has the serial number stored in it! The only difference is mines a 6 speed, his is an A-4.

What do you think you will fail for?

WTH is that going to solve other than your brother's car passing inspection?

sweetbmxrider 04-05-2009 10:37 AM

the state computer reads the PCM to ensure all monitors are set and no codes are present. it also reads the VIN.

97ws6 04-05-2009 08:42 PM

I think I am confusing some of you, My car is heavily modded, it wont pass inspection. My brother has the same vehicle, ( a 97 Firebird Formula) with no mods. If i put my stock PCM in his car, and my friend inspects it, I believe that it will show up as my car. Because the PCM has my serial number. Then he hands me the sticker, and I put it on my car. My brothers car already has a good sticker. I want one for my car.

LTb1ow 04-05-2009 08:44 PM

Why even bother with all that if he can just give you the sticker?

NastyEllEssWon 04-05-2009 08:44 PM

since your car is a 97 you wont have to go through emissions. if you have no check engine light on and its tuned you can bring it through private inspection. they only scan your cpu to make sure theres no monitors on or to make sure it hasnt been reset recently (like 100 miles).

97ws6 04-05-2009 10:33 PM

For one they will see the PCM has a different VIN,

2 They will know I have longtube headers, and no cats because they check

3 All inspection stickers are accounted for, no one can just give you one, they risk losing there license

I guess I was just checking to see if any of you guys had tried this? I dont want to get my buddy in any trouble, It should work like a charm. Your PCM info, is sent back to Trenton via modem during your inspection. What that means gentleman, is if you have a fake sticker, and a cop pulls you over, he knows that your car has not been inspected, before he walks up and checks your window sticker. And that can mean a heavy fine.

Tru2Chevy 04-05-2009 10:43 PM

Well, your buddy also can't legally give you the sticker to put on your car after he inspects your brother's car.

97ws6 04-05-2009 11:06 PM

Thats true! But he wont get caught this way. He will give me the sticker, I am the one worried he will get caught. I would rather get a no inspection sticker, I value my friends. I would bet most guys on this site, have a modification that this State deams illegal, Window tint, no air, no egr, gutted cat, longtube headers, pcm tune, New Jersey says you cant do any of these things. But we all have stickers dont we. I would have figured someone would have tried this technique already. I will keep you guys posted!

sweetbmxrider 04-05-2009 11:14 PM

dude you make no sense. if he won't pass your car, why the **** would he give you a sticker after passing your brothers car with your old computer? that is the dumbest thing i have ever heard. if your car has his sticker on it, no matter what scam you try to pull, it still traces back to him. get your vin programed to your pcm via dealership, get all the crap you don't have tuned out, and go get inspected. you would be better off dropping in a stock lt1 or reverting back to stock on your current setup than this whole stupid computer/car thing. also, IIRC, an a4 computer won't work in an m6 car. but good luck with all this nonsense.

NJSPEEDER 04-05-2009 11:17 PM

If you wanna play the who will or won't get caught game you are already going about this all wrong. If the car won't pass, it won't pass. If you try to play the system to get by you are gambling with your car, a whole bunch of money, and your buddy's inspection license and money.

If you are considering doing something like this, it isn't a good idea to discuss on an open forum where a lot of law enforcement officers are members.

LTb1ow 04-05-2009 11:22 PM

I think you should go to the DMV and see if you will pass. Never know.

wretched73 04-05-2009 11:24 PM

Can you pass emissions with long tubes?

LTb1ow 04-05-2009 11:26 PM

LOL sniff test or visual?

Technically NO. But for the OBDII cars, if the guy looking is an idiot, more than likely you will pass. For a sniff test, its gonna require two cats and a good tune.

wretched73 04-05-2009 11:29 PM

Yea i didnt think so, but your right, he should just go to state and get it over with. Or have his buddy over look all of the mods that might make him fail IMO

JL8Jeff 04-06-2009 09:23 AM

You should have someone program your VIN into the modified computer, add some cats to the y-pipe and you should be able to pass. Unless the car is so modified it can't possibly pass a visual, then it would be risky for anyone to inspect and pass it as they could be liable when you get pulled over.

LTb1ow 04-06-2009 09:39 AM

Jeff, odds are he has the same setup I have, unless hell freezes over he won't pass a sniff test.

sweetbmxrider 04-06-2009 09:41 AM

these threads should just get locked. its the same as street racing, completely ILLEGAL!

edit: Matt, 97. plug in test not tailpipe

LTb1ow 04-06-2009 09:47 AM

I know, I was just implying why even bother? No way its gonna "clean" it up any.

sweetbmxrider 04-06-2009 10:33 AM

emissions stuff for the visual portion....

LTb1ow 04-06-2009 11:01 AM

Yea, I know, but why not just cheat and tack on heat shields?

But really, who runs LTs anyways... geez.
