computer fans in car?

i am looking to hide my amp under my rear seat delete. maybe a couple other things too.

http://photos-c.ll.facebook.com/phot...90_4258905.jpg

i want to hook up some computer fans to make sure it stays cool. i really don't know much about them though and am looking for some guidance. 90mm seems to be my max clearance so i am thinking 80mm for wiggle room. well i found a couple fans that seem to move a lot of air for their size.

basic fan

speed controllable fan

as far as i can see with the vantec, there are 3 or possibly 4 wires. power, ground, and a signal wire to watch fan speed. possibly another for?

seems straight forward to wire up but since they are dc, will it be a direct hook up to a hot lead on the car? inverter necessary? can they handle 12-14 volts?

now the silverstone is a little fancier. i would love to have speed control, but i am uncertain how many fans i could hook into one controller? i would rather not have a separate controller for each fan.

also, it has 4 wires coming off of the fan, is that for rpm signal too?

is it better to push air over or pull air out? the setup isn't sealed, the front has a small gap as does the rear and the sides are open so i could cut holes in the sail panels and use that as the exhaust port. my overall setup would be two fans per delete box. ability to control all 4 fan speeds at the same time and to run at the same time when switched on. any and all insite is welcomed and appreciated! 8-)

rough sketch

possible fan placements and air flow

also, should i connect power through a relay like normal electric cooling fans?

i would thinkg you want to pull the hot air out......that will help the heat sinks on the amp dissipate their built up heat

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_fan

red wire can handle 12v, 4 wire is PWM

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fan_control

picture shows 4 dials for fans, and heres one f/s

http://www.google.com/products/catal...tle#ps-sellers

as far as placement i would push from one side and pull from the other

!amp.

Solved.

thanks for the quick responses! i added a diagram  let me check out the links....

Gonna be loud, any reason you can't stick the amp in the trunk ?

sweetbmxrider 04-09-2009 06:09 PM

edit: matt, the loudmouth should drain it out as will the music  i would think enclosed in the delete box surrounded by fabric should drain most of the noise. also, variable fan speeds means i can drop the speed down and they should be relatively silent in the environment when necessary.

 perfect!

now can i buy some sort of cover to enclose this setup? i want to mount it in the center console and don't want things to slide around and slam into it

LTb1ow 04-09-2009 06:10 PM

Mount it under the steering column.

sweetbmxrider 04-09-2009 06:13 PM

if necessary, i would rather contain it in the center console. so an enclosure wouldn't exist for said purpose? :-?

LTb1ow 04-09-2009 06:15 PM

Get a sheet of plexiglasss and make it mount inside the cassette holder?

sweetbmxrider 04-09-2009 06:23 PM

maybe but i want it to go in the center console. hidden!!!!! more funnnn!!!! i have an old cpu i'm going to go hack up now, more ideas!

thats sick but this monitors 4 temperatures

And know the temp of an amp is important?

lol

Now if you can integrate that to tell you pressure of certain gases....

yeah if it gets too high i can crank the fan speed or maybe its automatic

that is covered :) but i have no idea how a temp sensor could translate into a pressure sensor :-?

i am curious as to whether or not these fan controllers are simple two wire hook up or require more to make freakishly large calculations via teh CPU? i know the fans are 2-4 pin but am not sure if the controllers are self contained awesomeness

LTb1ow 04-09-2009 06:48 PM

I would assume they are separate of the computer they were intended to cool. Most of that stuff is aftermarket and I doubt you are gonna have to be soldering into your comps mother board to run some fans.

sweetbmxrider 04-09-2009 06:50 PM

yeah figured i'd ask. teh newb don't know these things!

looks pretty simple to hook up

sweetbmxrider 04-09-2009 07:01 PM

 PWM my remote light dimmers in my room use that! love ittttt

thanks so much 97camaro, that is the perfect setup no doubt. black housing is going to look great too!

is there any way i can buy something to act as a case that the controller would fit in?

NjbadSS 04-09-2009 09:05 PM

sweetbmxrider...could you keep me posted on your progress and what works best for you? I have an 1800 watt kenwood amp and have been going nuts figuring a way to hide it but afraid of it getting to warm. Thanks

sweetbmxrider 04-10-2009 07:41 AM

will do 8-) i'll take progress pics and whatnot. fans come next week.
