To being on the road once again.
Heres a pic of the engine bay after sand blasting, hand sanding and second coat of primer. Tomorrow comes black paint. Tonight im cleaning the minimal wiring left in the engine bay and putting new loom on it nice and tight so it doesnt look sloppy when its all done.

Next week when the car goes to my buddys shop the new trans I got will attach to the motor and be put in at once and the current trans will be removed prior to, so thats why its still in the car just gonna do it all at once.

transmaro93 05-07-2009 08:30 PM

looken good... but if i may a few tips next time... take the extra time to remove the the accessories, shocks,, brake booster... etc... it would look much better with that stuff in its original state rather than painted... and also... if its going black... you should have used like a black or dark gray prime... painting black over white is a bitch... and vice versa.... its doable.. no big deall... just need probably 4 -5 coats where as with a dark gray or black you would probably only need 2 coats.... good luck though cant wait to see it at some meets.... you comming to the meet next tuesday??

madness410 05-07-2009 10:48 PM

^ see dude i TOLD you to take the accessories out!

I could have went above and beyond but im dealing with alot right now and I kinda have to just get this done so with the short time frame of having to get it out of my moms house im doing what I can and taking it to the shop next week hopefully by the end of the week the motor and trans will go in and itll be drivable at least so I can store it somewhere until im ready down the road to keep adding to it.
I plan on going at least 4-5 coats of black and then clear on top it takes a little more time and effort but still not that big of a deal plus its def worth it.
The car wont be ready by the may meet unfortunetlly but I will be bringing the beater cleaned up with a few things added to it sporting some new wheels :), hopefully tho ill have the 383 at the june meet

wow that looks like crap man

after looking at that pic....shouldnt those mounts be bolted to the motor and the space in the middle be held onto by a big bolt through the pedastal? im not understanding how your motor is held on with the mounts on there like that.

SamhainZ28 05-08-2009 02:38 AM

afghan, let me know if you need anymore help pushing it in and out of the garage with your crazy mom yelling at us the whole way hahaha

Say what? The engine mounts will slide around them and a big bolt will connect the two pieces...

He must be used to ls1 style mounts where the clamshell with bushing is mounted to the motor where genI sbc its the other way around.

Side note. These are the 73+ clamshell motor mounts. 72 and down had solid steel "frame stands" and the rubber mount attached to the engine.

What is in his pic is correct for his year.

OP- Nice job on the prime, it should look good when it's done. I hope you covered the holes on your steering box when you sandblasted.

NastyEllEssWon 05-08-2009 11:59 AM

ooh. haha next time you should tape some of those accessories off. at least the outside looks awesome

NJSPEEDER 05-08-2009 12:14 PM

 wow

Is that the trans you are planning to use? Now that you shot primer down the dipstick tube and all over the seal you may want to have it gone over or at least replace the seal and tube. Just hope nothing made it anywhere that will cause damage.

I also don't see anything done to prevent the primer getting in any of the exposed lines for the brake lines, power steering, fuel, or the vacuum port for the brakes.

Take this as constructive criticism Jeremy, the 20 minutes you saved by not masking anything off now has the potential to cost you thousands of dollars and who knows how many hours.

No in the first post I stated this trans is being swapped for my new trans with the new motor at the same time.

As for masking things off....im slapping my head and praying that things arent going to be a problem but I am going to mask those things off before I paint it wow .
Wildbilly...another retarted thing I didnt do....what could I do to remove sand from those holes if any got in their? (Im looking on ebay now for a s10 manual box now holy crap im retarted)

Short of disassembling the box, not a whole hell of a lot. I'd just learn from the experience.

By the way, what size front tires are you going to run? If you've never driven a car with a manual box and big sticky tires you may want to consider just getting another power box.

Jersyboyy 05-08-2009 02:57 PM

Im planning on putting thinner tires on the front for the street. Itll only be driven on weekends at most and skinnies for the track. Oh and when I first got this car this box had bolts covering the power steering holes. It was essentially a non power steering box...I have no idea if that made it better for the track or not but I ended up going power since it was my dd at that point, point is iv driven it with no power before it sucked but that was every day driving.

I just took the sway bar off(heard its good for drag racing, and I have to really clean it up better before I paint it) Is that something I can put aside since this is more of a track car?

I am going to weigh out the price on different boxes if i can get a manual one cheap enough ill get it other wise ill get another power steering one well see.

And I took the box off...everything except the pitman arm wont pull off the bolt its connected to the steering. (not the bolt connecting the pitman arm to the box the other side) HOW CAN I GET IT OFF?

you can leave the front sway bar off, or you can leave it on and just take it on and off on track days......

Sweet thats what I thought tahknks mike.

Now how do you get the pitman arm off the bar that connects the two sides of the steering components?

Edit:

You mean the pitman off of the drag link? I use a ball joint seperator/pickle fork (yeah yeah I know). You can borrow one from Autozone for free I think. They aren't expensive so I just bought one.

TheBandit 05-09-2009 01:42 PM

Jeremy i'm almost positive i have a pitman arm puller. And pretty sure i got a ball joint seperator if you need anything. Shoot me a text.

Jersyboyy 05-09-2009 02:10 PM

I tried using a pickle for and yes drag link thats what its called god iv been trying to figure that out for days now! lol still with the pickle fork I couldnt get it but im going to try again now before work.

sweetbmxrider 05-09-2009 02:32 PM

Teds89IROC 05-09-2009 03:04 PM

The firewall, inner wheel wells, and rad support look good. I understand if you're in a rush and need to cut some corners by not removing everything but at least use masking tape..its your friend
