3.4L rocker setting
ok guys so you might know from another post that my sisters 94 3.4L camaro blew a head gasket. ive got that all taken care of but now i need some help setting the rocker arms to the right clearance.
so if anyone could give me a step by step that would be great. i havent done any repairs that involved rockers yet so im not to sure on how to set them thanks! |
loosen the rockers, use a feeler gauge to get the right clearance and torque em down should be fine.

im guessing i would have to keep bumping the motor around and doing each cylinder 1 at a time when they are fully open?

actually the more im thinking about it the more im thinking that those are self adjusting

Pretty you just torque em to whatever it calls for and thats that.

Those rockers shouldn't get torqued. Theres a sequence to follow, I can't remember it now. Just make sure before tightening down the rocker nut the valve you are tightening should not be opened. If you tighten down the nuts on a rocker when that cylinder should be on the compression stroke, you'll be good to go. With that being said, when using used hydraulic lifters, tighten down the nut 3/4 turn-1 turn from zero lash. On new hydraulic lifters I believe it is 1 1/2 turns.
With that being said, zero lash means when the rocker tip just touches the valve stem. You'll know your at zero lash because if you shake the rocker arm you would not be able to feel it rattle. |
Hey Eric, here's the procedure from the GM manual
Adjust valves when lifter is on base circle of camshaft lobe: A. The engine should be in the #1 firing position. This may be determined by placing fingers on the #1 rocker arms as the engine assembly timing mark on the torsional damper aligns with the crankshaft position sensor bolt located on the front cover. If the valves are not moving, the engine is in the #1 firing position. If the valves move the engine is in the #4 firing position and should be rotated one revolution to reach the #1 position. B. With the engine in the #1 firing position, the following valves should be adjusted Exhaust-1, 2 3 Intake-1, 5, 6 C. Tighten the adjusting njt until there is zero lash + 1-1/2 turns (This can be determined by rotating pushrod while turning adjusting nut). When lash has been removed, turn adjusting nut in 1-1/2 additional turns (to center lifter plunger) D. Crank the engine one crankshaft revolution. This is the #4 firing position. With the engine in this position, the following valves should be adjusted to zero lash + 1-1/2 turns Exhaust-4, 5, 6 Intake-2, 3, 4 |
