Header Gasket

So I forgot to take off the stock heat shielding on the passenger, and long story short at idle it vibrates like a mofo. Should I risk re using the header gasket if I drop the header to remove the shielding?

sweetbmxrider 05-24-2009 12:50 PM

what gaskets are they?

LTb1ow 05-24-2009 12:51 PM

Whatever came with the pacesetters... prob not the best idea I know, but I cannot afford a new set at the moment, soooo whatchu think?

sweetbmxrider 05-24-2009 12:57 PM

eh they might hold up, as long as they don't rip coming off. if not i have some fel-pros sitting on the bench :) i think they were under $20

got copper rtv laying around? i would deff throw it on before reinstalling.

LTb1ow 05-24-2009 12:59 PM

Ohhh, how much you want for em?

sweetbmxrider 05-24-2009 02:37 PM

i dono, whatever they cost me

LTb1ow 05-24-2009 06:55 PM

Well I got the header down and finally lost the stupid heat shielding, hopefully no more rattling now. The gasket stayed attached to the head so I think I am good to go.

madness410 05-26-2009 09:26 AM

lol one of my buddies has re used his many times after removing heads and he hasnt had any issues..he uses the aluminum ones i believe. were there any problems for you re-using the ones you had?

LTb1ow 05-26-2009 09:27 AM

Nope the old one played nicely and stuck to the head. Dropped the header, found a missing engine mount bolt, ditched the heat shielding and then spent the rest of the day cleaning things up around the engine.

madness410 05-26-2009 09:29 AM

nice. dam that was a fast response by the way.

LTb1ow 05-26-2009 09:50 AM

No work today, so I am just eating and lifting, all day.

And, ugh, went to get to the store, still have a rattling. Bah.

Did check the clearance to the tunnel brace?. My long tubes love to hit the tunnel brace.

LTb1ow 05-26-2009 11:54 AM

Yea I was hoping it wasn't that, but I think it is. The ORY sits too low.

Does yours sit closer to the front of the tunnel brace than the back?. If so you can try the fix I am doing in 10 minutes on mine and take a bunch of washers and place it under the front portion brace, this should give you some more room to play with unless your exhaust is real loose a 3/4's a inch should be enough space.

LTb1ow 05-26-2009 12:02 PM

Mine doesn't even bolt in flush.

Why?

LTb1ow 05-26-2009 12:05 PM

The ORY sits to low, I think. Maybe I will get her up in the air this afternoon and look at it.

Formulalt1 05-26-2009 12:06 PM

Do you have the exhaust hanger from the tranny tailshaft hooked up to the passenger side of the Y?

LTb1ow 05-26-2009 12:08 PM

Nope, wasn't even close to the ORY so didn't use it.

Formulalt1 05-26-2009 12:10 PM

I don't think your driver side Y is in all the way on the header. Take a look at that, the passenger side would line up and it would sit higher if it was.

LTb1ow 05-26-2009 12:11 PM

That could be the prob, I out it together with the car on stands, so nothing was perfect under there...

Formulalt1 05-26-2009 12:18 PM

I did mine on stands as well but a easy trick to get it to slide in easier is sand the inside of the Y (if you have a die grinder and make sure to not take off too much material, that works better) and the outside of the headers and then use some grease. There are usually some little sharp edges and such that make it resist from sliding in all the way.

sweetbmxrider 05-26-2009 03:29 PM

chassis mounted torque arm with long tube clearance

LTb1ow 05-26-2009 03:38 PM

Yea but its the first tunnel brace that makes noise.
