why does the camaro weigh so much?
|
Because its a modern sports car built off a sedan platform.
|
yeah but the combo of caliper weights and wheel weights is obnoxious
|
but i dont think it really adds any weight to the car. Wheel weights are needed, not sure about the caliper weights but im sure they serve a purpose.
|
The sheer size of the wheels & brakes are too much unsprung weight. I do not think it is odd that the v6 cars are said to handle better and do better on the skid pad. Al, will the 18s fit over the SS brakes?
Car is too tall & too wide. I'm sure there are other points they could have cut weight - like how about manual seat tracks? Power seats are standard all except very base, and even it has power recliners. WTH is with power recliners? I've been a supporter of this car, excited about its return. That excitement sure has worn off into let down and fail. |
from the placement of those wheels you can bet thats not a STATIC balance either. theres more weights on the inner lip of that wheel too im willing to bet.
this whole car is ftl. i said it before and ill say it again. the Nue-Gen Camaro is ftl. |

yes static isnt a very accurate balance but i was saying if it was a static balance with 4 oz's it wouldnt really be too unrealistic...seen wheels really off before. just saying if they even have a standard amount of weight on the inside of that wheel there can very well be as much as 5.5 oz of weight on those wheels. holy christ. i wonder if theres a way to order the car with smaller vette wheels. |

1) The CTS-V had the nearly the same exact set up of brakes, even down to the diamter of teh rotors, and they came with 18's. 2) the current CTS-V has larger rotors, and run on 19's. 3) The Z06 and ZR1 both have larger rotors and calipers, and a 19 inch wheel fits over the massive 15.5 inch rotor and massive 6 pistion caliper on the ZR1. Too tall and too wide? I will disagree on the dimensions. Camaro is 1 inch wider then a 4th gen, and 2 inches taller, but displaces its weight over a much wider, by over a foot, longer wheel base. The problem lies in that the Zeta platform, as I stated in the first post, is a Sedan platform. With the Mustang, its a chassis designed to be a sports car. The Zeta chassis was designed to build performance sedans and coupes, but different then the Camaro. More like the GTO in being a more upright kind of coupe, a two door sedan if you will. Camaro's problem isnt weight so much. Again, as I pointed out in another thread, the M3 is 10 inches shorter, much narrower, and lower, yet only comes in 100lbs lighter then the Camaro SS. Thats 150lbs heavier then a Mustang. M3 uses a lot of aluminum and has a carbon fiber roof. Camaro's problem is where the weight is. Its up higher, thanks to a sedan chassis that placed the belt line so high, therefor putting the mass of the car above the center line of the vehicle. Even if you cut off another 100lbs to match the M3, it wouldnt handle like an M3. But no matter, the Camaro is still a stellar performer. Nasty just cant get over it, but the car is a solid home run. Could some things be better? Sure. I could make a post going over every single detail, and make the car better. It wont change anyones mind here. But is it the best car in its class? By a challeng...i mean a boat length. Removing things like power windows, door locks and seats are stupid. The motors are so light, and the systems are programed way long in advance that it would cost GM more, and for very little weight loss. I would them rather spend the money on coming up with a better dash, a track-package, or aluminum body pannels. Not to mention power things are now a must. While some of you more basic people might not understand the concept, someone spending north of 25k for a 21st century muscle/sports car gets in it and some how it has manual seats when a 17k Cobalt has 6 way power....it looks bad. This isnt the 60's. As for that picture with the wheel weights, the wheel shoudl ahve been scraped, and it most likely will. Any wheel that out of balance should be taken off and replaced with a new one. Quote:

i feel the new camaro, which i held high hopes for being cool, is actually a step DOWN from what i own. btw. i would love to meet a new camaro from a dig. you can see who's higher on the food chain
dont be mad because i knock gm, nothing good has come from it lately...oh no response about the new camaro on the side of the road on fire in nj? haha you just sound butt-hurt over the new camaro being crap and gm limping to the grave. you defend it with opinions even though your being combated by facts. if you like them so much. go buy one. |
Will do.
Facts? What facts? You just say its FTL. What facts are thoes? Camaro has won every single comparison vs its competition, in both V6 and V8 trims, for the exception of the C&D article. The nearest fighter is the Mustang GT with the Track Package, but unless you want your spleen scrambled going over NJ roads, I would move away from that. Not to mention that a GT with the Track package hits 36k. thats 5 grand higher to match the SS. Don't even bring in the Challenger. |
