Computer guys help please?

Hi all

Im not all that wise in the ways of the PC so I have a probably dumb question for the tech savy.

I just recieved a used hp desktop as a graduation gift and I cant get the monitor to come on. The tower will come on and I can hear the desktop chime when it boots up but all the monitor does is flash the little green light but wont show a picture? I can hold the button and make it go out but I cant make in consistently stay on or show a picture. I tryed hooking up my montior and cable from my last computer and it did the same light thing which it has never done before.

What did I miss?:-?

Thanks

Thats your first problem

Are you connecting the monitor to a card or an onboard video input? If your not that savvy to understand, are you plugging it in right by where the mouse/keyboard plug into, or towards the bottom where the "slots" are.

its plugged in by the mouse and keyboard....it dosent look like it will fit in anywhere else on the tower

yeah, its probably the HP proprietary connection for VGA. Is there a white plug near the slots on the computer tower? Most likely you will see it there (It should look something like this) http://i5.ebayimg.com/03/i/000/ee/e6/aff7_1.JPG . You will need to either get the plug from HP (or whoever gifted it to you) or get a little converter that fits in and converts to whatever you are using. I am assuming its VGA (blue connector).

it's neither... its something that hp uses for their graphics cards... it is reallllly annoying because it can be confused with dvi

i figured it out....apparently there was some kind of video card installed into it that makes it only work if your hooking up a twin monitor system or something i dunno

it works without the twin monitor, you just need the proprietary cable...
