Rear end fluid.
Since I am in the fluid changing mood today, figure I should change the rear end fluid. I have never changed it since I got the car, so might as well.
Question is what fluid do I use and how much? |
didn't i tell you not to long ago?

gm gear oil p/n - 12345977 |
Ah cool!
Thanks! Would an pepboys/autozone have that stuff? |
pepboys/zone will have rear end fluid and a fake version of the additive. but your best bet is to get the additive at the dealer (i bought some last week and it was 11 bucks and change) and get your gear oil at any store you want
|
Ok, sounds good, will I get strange looks at dealer?
Always seem to when I get things for my car there... lol |
no, just go to the parts counter and ask for "limited slip additive" they should have a box of the little bottles. then just put the full bottle in with your fluid change and you will be good to go
|
K thanks!
With the TA covers, I just fill it to the top vent correct? |
Ok sounds good, I think...
I prob am over thinking this. lol Maybe a tmmr project or this weekend. |
only takes a few minutes, it should be a 3/8th's drive to get the fill plug out, its much easier to drain if you have an aftermarket cover......dunno if you do or not?
|
Yea I do, sorry, I mentioned TA, figured that woulda conveyed it.
|
i failed at reading your post. the ta cover makes it easy as hell, theres an allen screw at the bottom for drain, and one at the top for fill. but you still need to open the factory fill plug to get the right oil level....
fill it until the oil starts to come out of the factory fill hole. |
Oh ok, so drain it, and then fill it with the upper most allen screw until it comes out the next lower hole?
I have never really looked at the cover so pardon my questions. |
no its on the differential. the factory plug is just a 3/8's drive. take that out, fill in the top bolt on the cover, and stop when it comes out of the factory fill.
|
Ah ok, well I guess it will be interesting... prob end up making a mess.

Rear fluid is the best smelling stuff around. So use some clothing you never want to wear again or else chicks will not want to come anywhere near you. I know from experience. lol
|
Replaced mine with Mobil 1 75w90 full synthetic gear oil $10.00 per qt. at autozone it has a limited slip additive built in. I also replaced my cover nothing fancy just a stock cover, about 10 bucks rock auto mail order. To fill the rear it took 1 3/4 quarts.
|
i prefer amsoil severe gear 75w90. it doesnt need an LSD additive. if you want, you can not use the additive, and it will tighten up your diff some. people have road raced for years without the additive, and have had no ill effects. try redlines line of NS fluids....as in non-synthetic, and without the friction modifier.
|
Yea, I will take another trip down to the Zone and bug BiGal for some rear fluid.

Fake posi additive? Whats fake about it?
I used the TransX Limited Slip additive we sell at work, and it works fine. A little wine, but I think that I might need to add a bit more fluid... |
