So how many of you guys have broken your rears at the track mostly stock.

I keep saying I'm hitting the track soon but i think my fear of killing the rear is getting the best of me. I was at island last year and watched every single f body there that night break the rear. I'm especially scared because I have suspension parts to improve traction...

Whos done it with minimal power mods?

NJ346 06-02-2009 07:26 PM

I've got 180k miles on the rear and it's holding. I have gears sitting in the garage, but I'm afraid to piss the 10 bolt off so it's staying stock until it blows. Btw, I run mid 12's.

racerz 06-02-2009 11:22 PM

Had 4:11 gears put into the stock 7.5 inch 10-bolt and ran D.O.T. slicks for 6 years and it held. I was running an auto trans only leaving the line at barely above an idle. Probably alot of luck involved but I would think for a couple of passes u should b fine

98tadriver 06-02-2009 11:49 PM

its hit or miss. ive broken my first rear with street tires and some bolt ons, ive broken a rear on the street with drag radials, and ive had a rear last thru 6k clutch dumps on slicks and DR's. just have a backup rear at home ready. BTW i went from breaking rears when i ran 12s to having this last one hold up into the low 11s

btownws6 06-02-2009 11:52 PM

i have the same fear of braking it but i never launched the car so i wouldn't know i'm gunna wait till i have a spare to fully launch it but it seems ok so far

you know my rear does me well on dr's....

camaro2you 06-03-2009 08:48 AM

My rear has about 19k on it 3.42's, full rear supsension, dr's at 13-15psi, 3500 stall and I leave hard everytime...been holding up just fine for me and I beat the piss out of it over 30 track passes and about 2k of street abuse.

79CamaroDiva 06-03-2009 11:44 AM

If you have an automatic your rear will hold up better. If you have a manual, drag the clutch instead of dumping it to save parts. Its not the power, its the sudden hit that breaks stuff. I've hit a 1.84 60' on mine stock and its fine.

Mike 06-03-2009 12:15 PM

i broke one ten bolt on the street on street tires, another on the track on drag radials, and just had to rebuild my 12bolt after 2 seasons on drag radials

98tadriver 06-03-2009 07:19 PM

if you have a daily driver, give her hell and hold on tight!! those stud girdles seem to help quite a bit based on my experiences

01blackz28 06-04-2009 06:18 PM

4.10s daily drive track once rear is almost shot. It see's abuse on the street with radials. With the car on the lift i can spin one rear tire and the other one doesn't move.

... Traction is your enemy , I mean how is it holding up on the street ? If you feel the twist when you hit 2nd tacking it to the track wouldnt be the best option. But if it still feels sturdy your probably fine. And if you have a automatic , id be more worried about your trans those damn 4l60E's are a crappy design. My buddy went thru 2 in one year and his was lt1 was stock.

Anti_Rice_Guy 06-05-2009 09:30 AM

It's pot luck, but don't dump the clutch and you should be fine.

traction isnt as bad as wheelhop. if you can get it to HOOK it will usually last a bit, but wheelhop will kill a 10bolt in a day

but when it broke, how were you leaving? was it just a 4k dump?

Firebird67dude 07-28-2009 08:59 PM

I broke my rear with 3.73s on stock street tires at a 3500 rpm launch. The spider gears exploded. Remember that melessa. haha.

In the 67 i blew half the teeth off the original pinion with who knows how many miles on it. With 3.55s in the same car the pinion decided to look like the leaning tower of pizza(w.e.).

Anti_Rice_Guy 07-28-2009 09:53 PM

Tim, what about the night everybody and their mother was there, this spring?

S.J.SLEEPER 07-28-2009 10:11 PM

I got about 5k out of a center section, track every weekend, dumpin the clutch @ 5000-5500 r's 1.65 -1.80 60 footers . on nittor nt555r's ran low 12's mid 11's on spray. like i said i popped a center out every 5k ... but it gets easier every time you do it.

V 07-29-2009 09:47 AM

i broke mine driving through a parking lot, put part of the carrier out through the rear cover... that was the stock drivetrain.
2nd rear went on the highway going to the e-town car show. never opened it up to check it yet.
3rd rear is still hanging on, but i ONLY run bald street tires if i race it.

Reading ftw my friend.

Anti_Rice_Guy 07-29-2009 06:27 PM

I know that wasn't your first time breaking a rear, didn't know how the others happened...

MattysTA 07-30-2009 06:55 PM

i blew my stock rear a few weeks ago but it was due to the ring gear bolts backing out. not from track abuse...although it did help it along im sure

bad64chevelle 07-30-2009 09:31 PM

I broke the one in my 94 with a CAI and exhaust on the street. I was running low tire pressure and able to get the car to hook pretty well though.

Squirrel 08-04-2009 01:32 PM

mine held up fine besides a little whining, probably 50 or so passes at the track with 130-150k on it... and i beat the hell out of that car, so like everyone else said its all luck
