Problem with spohn steering kit
So, I went to install my spohn steering kit today and I encountered a problem. When I go to tighten the inner tie rod, the chrome castle nut will not tighten. The stud will spin before the nut can reach the cotter pin hole.
Anyone with knowledge of this problem? Thanks guys |
you need to use a impact, a 3/8 impact gun not a 1/2". or you can take nut off, drop the lick down, use a straight edge punch to make grooves in the bolt where it is conical and is supposed to seat into socket. then reinstall tap with hammer a couple times, reinstall nut while putting pressure with a pry bar of somesort against the tierod to hold it in place in socket then try to tighten nut.

you can always use a clamp to pull the tie rod onto the centerlink then tighten the bolt. ITs spinning because there is not enough friction in the tapered connection. You can even give the flat surface of the centerlink a tap or two with a hammer after the clamp is on to tighten it up more before you continue.
i seem to remember having this problem on my car as well. the new tie rods came with locking nuts and no cotter pins, the old parts were castle nuts and cotter pins. I used the old nuts. |
