Ahhrrggg... Code 42 issue.
Got a constant code 42 right after start up.. Had it feeding live data thru tuner pro, says that it has no spark reference and the spark advance is at 41.2 degrees. Changed the module twice and no change. I know there has to be a reference signal cuz the injectors still fire and the car runs. Anyone seen this issue before?

i cant remember if this is the code that gave me hell on my tpi monte build...
if so, check the tan wire that goes from the dizzy to the ecm |
I have 0 voltage at the bypass wire... i trace it back to the computer and at the pin it has 12 volts. I'm not sure but i remember somewhere that it was supposed to be @ 5 volts
if its like a ford, reference should be 5 volts
So now i have a more serious problem. It turned out to be a bad ignition module. Now with the bypass wire connected the car run absolutely horribly. It chugs, spits and back fires, but the moment you unplug the bypass it runs better but stalls after 20 seconds. Could it just be another bad module?
Also... I seen somewhere that a TPS not set right could cause this issue... |
check where the base timing is set, once the wire is connected, it'll adjust from whatever its already at/
the base timing is 7 degrees and its been programmed in to see that at base thru tuner pro
is the wire maybe shorting out somewhere? it happened in my monte, burned on the header and caused all sorts of issues, took weeks to find
Nah... checked all the wires to the ecm from the module. i got yet another module, the car ran for about 10 minutes without a code 42 issue. the light has yet to come back on but the car runs like absolute crap. still sputters and spits and dies when you throw it in drive. And it doesn't want to restart. This seems a lil far fetched, but maybe a fuel issue? My fuel pressure goes from 38-52. Seems like the pump might be failing
Have you checked the base timing with the EST unplugged? Should be at 6* BTDC with with it unplugged, then the ECM will add extra timing. If it's way off base, that could explain the hard-starting symptom. What does it sound like when you try to restart - does it fire at all, or just crank and do nothing?
It sounds like its got a kinked fuel line... its quick to crank but like stumbles getting running.. you let it take over and run its self it chugs then smooths out. as soon as you touch the throttle it acts like you took its fuel away and wont rev above 2000... and put it in drive.. forget it.. its stalls out... it does the same thing with or without the bypass hooked up
Figured it out finally... It ended up being the distributor. Changed it out... reset the timing.. car runs beautifully
nice
Thanks for the help on that... I am starting to see why i'd rather be back to the basics with a carb
