setup for 220?
well i just picked up a nice 60 gallon air compressor today and it needs to have the 220 outlet. my garage currently has just the standard outlets. how much of a pain is it going to be to wire the 220 in? do i just run a new breaker in the box along with correct wiring and new plug?

yup basically. when i got my compressor, i got an estimate from an electrician... at least 1,000 bucks. but then again that was also to run the wiring about 100 feet. I ended up going to lowes/home depot and getting the main wiring, i forgot the size but i went at least one size bigger than i really needed which is always a good idea. Then you get a double breaker specific for your main box. The 2 hot lines from the breaker run to your new outlet and a ground/neutral as well. That in simple terms, before you do anything more, i know there are a few electricians on this board that could be more specific, i just dont remember completely from when i did it and its not like i can go and look. But also you gotta make sure you homes wiring into the house can handle a 220 line. All said and done, my setup cost like 300 installed myself.

I just did it the simple way and made a giant 100 foot 220 extension cord. It goes from my basement to either the garage or driveway. Pretty sweet. I dont have a welder anymore but it still runs the 10cfm compressor which is total overkill for anything i do lol. Need to get me a tig!

you need to check the tag on the compressor to find out the amperage, which will dictate the size wire/ 2 pole breaker you need to run for your new outlet. |

after than its pretty straight forward as far as the hookup, the only tricky part would be getting the wiring from point a to point b. im pretty confident a 20 amp circuit, with #12 gauge wire would be sufficient for the app. I would really doubt it draws anymore than 8 amps at 220 volts. |
alright thanks guys. im probably going to give my moms uncle a call (who is an electrician) to come over and give me a hand.
