Rear dif problem ?
I just got my 98Z on the road today and I noticed when its cold I get a groaning/squeeking noise from the rear on low speed turns and it feels like its binding slightly .Is this possibly a limited slip noise ? No clanking or banging .Sounds like an old house window sticking .Any idea what it is ?? Maybe change the rear dif fluid and put the GM posi additive in it ?
Thanks ,Ed |
Carrier is going out the back door.....

i would check the fluid level first and then change the fluid + posi additive but it sounds like it might be more than that.

pull cover & see how bad the metal on the magnetic is, an get a buddy to rotate the tires to get the carrier/planetaries to move, should be able to isolate the problem/noise with the rear open. if carrier is bad, and your not looking to spend alot of money, the zexel-torsen diff is a decent unit and inexpensive if you purchase as a pullout unit |
This may answer your question about what to do first.
It sounds like the carrier to me as well. SJ is offering some good advice. Jack it up, pull the cover and have somebody rotate the tires so you can watch the carrier move. |
thanks for all of the answers guys . It wont do it while driving though . It only does it on tight turns at very low speeds ( under 10-15 mph ),like when your parking or have the steering wheel turned pretty far .

so used to the dumarse retorts on here, i was damn near knocked over by that one. ha hahehe hey eddie, double check with someone in car make sure noise isn't coming from right front,,, seen a bunch of front hub bearings go in these cars. common characteristics are a slight lean to right or left and you will hear a groaning/rumbling sound and as u straighten it out noise goes away . |
Fixxed !!! Did the 373's and put in some 75W90 Gear oil with GM L/S additive . nice and quiet not . No more chatter or rusted screw noises !
