Short Block Build Question

Hey I live in National Park, NJ 08063 and i am looking for a place to get a sbc 383 short block build. does anyone know any good places with a fair price?

S.J.SLEEPER 11-16-2009 07:46 PM

where the he\\ is national park. i know of a couple good places but need to know round abouts where you at. tell me a bigger more known city

I used Wither's Automotive in Collingswood for my 383. It's an older couple (in there 70's) and it looks like your pulling into someones driveway to get to there shop. I had a few problems with the engine along the way but they were extremely helpful getting everything straightened out.

i am 10 mins from philly, 2 mins from woodbury,15 mins from camdem

looking for a 383 storker all forged just short block

JSPERFORMANCE 11-17-2009 10:33 PM

"all forged" dosent really narrow it down much..

how much hp are you looking to make?
street? drag? autocross?
what kind of fuel?
nitrous?
forced induction?
what heads are you looking to use?
auto or manual?

We build custom engines per application, if you are looking for just a generic crate engine you may want to try GM.

Whoboy580 11-17-2009 10:37 PM

sorry i am looking to run pump gas, trick flow heads, manual transmission, the top end kit says 500hp, street/strip, nitrous maybe one day 150 shot at max,

JSPERFORMANCE 11-17-2009 10:40 PM

Do you have a core?

Whoboy580 11-17-2009 10:43 PM

no but i perfer 4 bolt main 1 piece rear main seal

js, if he doen't have a core, and you don't i can supply a good core for a cheap price, alum or iron

JSPERFORMANCE 11-17-2009 10:52 PM

Ballpark for a complete 383 short block with the correct parts to handle nitrous and around 660 hp would be around $5500 or so..

JSPERFORMANCE 11-17-2009 10:53 PM

At the time we get started on the build we can narrow down a more exact price but at least this gives you an idea of what you are up against..

Whoboy580 11-17-2009 10:56 PM

I just want short block. Block, freeze plugs, cam bearings, forged crank, forged rods, forged pistons, main bearings, ARP Bolts. how much?

JSPERFORMANCE 11-17-2009 11:04 PM

Maybe I was mistaken.. Do you just want a box full of parts or a complete short block?

Whoboy580 11-17-2009 11:06 PM

a complete short block but 5500 for a shortblock i thought you were trying to sell me everything. this is exact what i want a assembled short block. i will buy heads, intake, oil pan and so on

JSPERFORMANCE 11-17-2009 11:12 PM

If you want to make that kind of power, use nitrous, and want it to last a half decent amount of time, the correct parts need to be used. Also consider the machine work plus the added clearancing for the 383. We are no longer talking about a 350 horse engine anymore. Gotta pay to play..

i got a quote for 2100.00 by D&S in Camden. Talked to Dan For awhile about what i wanted

thats just what the stroker kit & parts cost (pistons, rods, crank, lifters, bearings, roller tchain,)

a good rotating assembly starts @ $1200.

i think you better talk with that guy again and see what your exactly gettting for $2100

the machine work alone is close to $900-$1000

JSPERFORMANCE 11-17-2009 11:29 PM

I was thinking the same thing..

I had figured on a 4130 crank, JE pistons, Compstar rods, Silicon bearings, moly rings, Core charge, dampner, flywheel..

Parts alone were over $2500 before I got into the small stuff (freeze plugs, rear main, etc. etc)

Whoboy580 11-17-2009 11:32 PM

i did its for block, machine work, rotating kit, and assembly. It also comes balanced and everything. He builds racing motors all the time and is super chevy magazine and also known as GN man

LTb1ow 11-17-2009 11:33 PM

And for 2100... what kind of parts are you getting? Some sweet eagle parts?

ah... don't start messin with him.

i honestly think that he has misunderstood the builder.

even an eagle rotating assembly for a 383 is $900+

then you still need t-chain,lifters,freeze plugs, valley vents,
misc. gaskets, cam if he is having it installed.

torquplated, align honed, bored, decked, clearancing for the stroker machine work is $750 @ a rinky dink machine shop & $1000 @ a reputable shop that knows what they're doin.

just doesn't add up any which way you look at it.

he needs to confirm and get what he's quoted on paper

JSPERFORMANCE 11-17-2009 11:40 PM

I know who Dan Smith is.. Excellent builder.
Good parts cost what they cost, even if he was giving them to you at cost and doing the labor for free the total would be more than $2100. The only way it could be cheaper is if the engine was gonna be built with cheaper stuff most likely chinese knock off parts.
