rebuild advice and comments
so my 02 camaro with its sts turbo kit just too a crap, sounds like a rod bearing and by the look of the excessive blow by a piston ring or two.
since the whole thing has to get rebuilt i'm looking at either eagle or scat forged 383 stroker. i'm thinking since i'm only going to do about 5psi boost i'm gonna lower my compression to 10-1 with dished pistons and either 65 or 67cc heads from patriot performance. i was thinking 9.5 but i'm not running alot of boost and dont want to loose low end performance. i'm also thinking of keeping the stock cam for tuning ease. since it was one heck of a process getting it dialed in originally and i'm sure that caused some problems, which is probably why i'm at where i am now. anyone here ever put in an sts kit or messed with a turbo 383 before? i'm leaving for iraq in feb so the work will probably get done while i'm away. i'm def pissed this happened about 2 weeks ago and i almost had all the bugs worked out of the install. |
I havent figured it out why yet, but not many people do 383 LS1's. Im not sure if there is a reason for it or not.
As for heads, stock 241 heads are already 67cc~10.1:1, and 243 heads are 64cc~10.5:1. Most people doing budget turbo builds go to the 317 heads; Im not 100% sure, but I believe they are 72cc~9.6:1. EDIT: 317 heads are 70cc~9.8:1 The stock cam in a 383 is going to be weak for its potential. The 383 may require a bigger turbo to act the same as a 346 with your current sts turbo. |
Are you going with the 177th? I leave in January to go with DC and I'll be staying until may

i agree the stock cam is def weak for a 383 but doing a comp cams custom turbo might give me more headache on the initial tune. i looked into the 383 and its one of the more common strokers that i've read about because of the rod and crank geometry. the other option was a 396 i think. i'm checking to see if i'll need a bigger turbo with the 383, i may just make it with 5psi and not max it out. the scat kit is supposed to be 9.5 compression with 70cc heads i was thinking with low boost to keep around 10:1 unless 9.5:1 wont mess with the low end hp & tq, then i'm all game. what uses a 317 head?
my main goal was getting more power but not messing with daily drivability. it was working great, i could drive around all day in vacuum and as soon as i opened her up over 3k she boosted like mad. the 383 should bring that down to full at like 2500 but it may surge at the top end idk yet my other option is dropping the turbo until i can get a bigger one and go n/a with it. should get a lil over 500 hp out of it. but god does that thing sound soo good spooling. its actually louder than the exhaust |
jerz, def not with the 177th, i'll b there till aug / sept

The 317s are off 6.0L blocks. You should not have to limit your build because of tuning. Find a better tuner?
|
lol the tuner actually works pretty well, its the diablo sport. i've been working with sts's tuning dept emailing the tune back and forth for modifications. i was just thinking it would b easier using the stock cam and getting her dialed in first then adding the cam. kind of taking it in steps. i am looking for a shop that can do it all at once too. i have two shops in mind for the work but i'd have to send it out after to get it tuned. i'm looking into a third tomorrow. dyno is def the fastest and probably easiest way, the handheld has worked out really well to though, costs less takes a lil longer though

lq9 heads work on the ls1 too right?
|
stock crank in ls1's are good to 1000hp
if your not dead set on stroking it,and don't want to spend a whole lot of $ here it is. stock crank scat forged 6.100 rods (6.098) set of forged pistons (diamond, mahle, probe,je,manley) 317 heads (6.0l truck heads) cometic mls gaskets .051" (can opt to go thinner to raise comp. up a lil if you don't want to be in the 9.6:1 range or you can take .010" off the 317 heads) chromely pushrods thunder racing cam "TR 224-114" - 224/224 .563/.563 114 LSA very minimal tuning and great power increase, duration below 230's so works great with turbo. stock ls1 will handle 7-9psi of boost with no problem as long as its tuned properly. so if upgraded to forged than obvious it will definetly hold the boost. if you need a crank, i have one already ground, mag'd, micro polished. and also i have a set of 317 heads for ya. hmmmm, def an option. the cam is one i was looking at when i was looking at going n/a. i'll b honest i like the idea of a 383, the kits @ $2300. but i like options aswell. i didnt know the stock crank could go so high.
when sts sent me the tune, they sent it rich for "safety" reasons. the damn thing detonated so bad it blew the kit off the back of the car, and no i wasnt even under boost. imagine my displeasure hooking the thing back up under the car on the side of the road. |
i blew mine off on the parkway once but that was before i welded it on
|
u still have the kit on?
|
Sell the diablo tuner and put the money towards a dyno tune. checkout the forced induction section on ls1tech and look at some peoples sigs to see what cams they are running.
|
yea its working good for me
|
did you use the predator for the tuning?
|
if your set on doing a stroker
sdpc has great deals (scoggin dickey) rotating assy. for $1795 & up also TSP has great deals on kits too. i like the tsp kits better cause most come with diamond pistons diamond pistons ftw |
