PS3 backwards compatability?

I was really considering getting a ps3 once they started advertising it for $299 but im starting to read about it cause i hardly play games but i do watch alot of movies and i still play some ps2 games*(nfs uderground)

and from what im reading i cant play any ps2 games on this ****? wtf.. does anyone know if thats 100% true or if there is any way around it?

any insight would help alot thanks in advance

Yea.. they couldn't afford it so they stopped making that version from what I gather.

Older versions could do it.

Get a new NFS...

No the new PS3 will not play PS2 games, but it will play PS1 games.

The first version (80gig I think it was) could play all PS1, PS2, and PS3 games as it had the physical hardware inside to do so. The other versions (60 gig, 120gig) don't have that. Sony decided to switch over to what Microsoft does with the 360 and do it as a software upgrade and at Sony's discretion as to what games can and can't be played. So if you can find an older 80gig version (I think that's the one it was) then that's what you want to get.

Tsar 12-06-2009 04:20 PM

I'm sure if you ignore their product and don't buy anything made by Sony they will make you a version that is backwards compatible so you can play NFS.

You can probably pick up a used version for 20 bucks, is it really that big of a deal?

Yup, it was the 80gig, sheep lover is correct.

Iroc-z86 12-06-2009 04:25 PM

yeah and this is why i got my 80 gig fixed instead of buying the slim. best decision ever.

How often do you really play ps2 games, I know prior to getting PS3 I haven't touched my ps2 in several months, plus new games + better graphics > older games, worse graphics.

BurninrubberGT 12-06-2009 05:19 PM

20/60/first 80 gig are backwards compatable
if the system has 4 usb's, it is one of those

Frosty 12-06-2009 05:23 PM

Holy ****, I wish that was my worst problem in life to get upset about

It takes 30 seconds to hook up the PS2 when you want to play it, what's the big deal

I could see if your PS2 burnt out and you wanted to kill 2 birds with 1 stone by buying a PS3 but damn dude...relax a bit, you'll live longer.

i had the same problem, little grease and a sludge hammer does the trick

Saitin 12-07-2009 01:18 AM

the new ps3 is not ps2 compatible because they want people to buy ps3 games, once the ps3 game sales increase they will release a software update for the ps2 compatibility.
