So It Comes Down to This Which Transmission to go with...

Well I've been debating for sometime now on wether I want my car to be a stick or keep it auto.

If i go auto I have a Built 4l60e with hardened parts that i bought off the previous owner of my car, and If i'm not mistaken a 3400stall

Or I could Trade my full auto swap and $500 for a Full T56 conversion including everything plus a centerforce stage 3 clutch. The T56 has been fully rebuilt, http://www.thegearbox.org/catalog/it...17/3503850.htm
and It also has bronze shift fork pads. The transmission shifts like a dream and there is No grinding at all in any gears.

Whats Your Imput I'm building the car for street/strip but i'm also going to daily it in the spring and summer months. The car will have a H/C and full bolt on set up with a cam comparible to a gm847

Manual all the way.

stay auto if you like the race. If you plan on summer cruising a lot and actually rack up miles with the car, go manual for a better overdrive gear ratio=better gas mileage.

For me, I always believe an automatic car should stay automatic and a manual car should stay manual. It is just easier that way. With that being said, I would want a built auto if you are going to be taking it down the strip, since it will be more consistent. A GM auto with a good converter and good internals will be very nice and quick.

For me, if I wanted a stick car I would buy one. Not swap a manual trans into an auto.

Stupercharged 12-15-2009 09:32 PM

I know I Tried to wiegh out the ups and downs of each and they even out at a certain point like manuals more fun , auto is faster , manual is a pain in the ass in traffic , auto easy to drive , manual has better gas mileage...ect, And I could care less about whats easier or harder to drive they were just examples lol

BonzoHansen 12-15-2009 09:33 PM

what is your 'daily driving' like? god, my current commute would suck moneky nuts with a stick

We'll if I tried to do that my car would still be a green auto v6 hard top lol, Its already grey,v8, t top... might as well make the title more inacurate while i can lol.

Unless your building a drag car, i'd always go for stick... i like auto, but for my daily.

Daily driving is 15 miles to school and back mon through friday then from pa to jersey and back on the weekends so it has its far share of city and highway miles plus i love to just go on random drives when ever i can...

Foosh 12-15-2009 09:42 PM

Well, stick is gonna be better on gas if it makes a difference... and since your a student i'm sure it does.

Anti_Rice_Guy 12-15-2009 09:45 PM

It'd be worlds easier to keep as it is, and would be faster at the track. Stick would yield better mileage on the rides back from PA and be a funner street car. Honestly, for you, it's really a toss up. You always wanted a stick car. I think you'd be happier with a stick, just to give up a bit at the track. It's just whether that extra work is worth it.

manual, no questions... nothing feels better than ripping 2nd and having to look out the passenger side window to steer

I have to that with my auto

But my vote goes to stick. I think you would have more fun with it with the driving you. Big stalls suck in traffic so either way your not gonna be happy

ib4200 12-15-2009 11:35 PM

i voted auto, you already have the auto trans and its already built, you will still have a second car that can get better gas mileage if needed and as it is you have a very long list of things that still need to be done to get it up and running

Squirrel 12-16-2009 12:23 AM

its just IMO that the fun of a manual outweighs any negatives it may have, especially if youre not planning on being in bumper 2 bumper traffic everyday

Nitr0racing21 12-16-2009 12:43 AM

My personnel experience would make me go with a 4L80E because its a better gear ratio set but its your choice. A 4L60E can only handle so much.

JerzLT1 12-16-2009 12:56 AM

go with a stick and put some 4.10s in it. if it was going to see more track time than street time i would say auto, but with more street time than track time just swap it over

xrelapse13 12-16-2009 02:29 AM

if your gonna be driving around and cruising more, IMO i'd say go with a stick since i think you'd enjoy it more. Also, a well driven stick wont give up that much to an auto.

thunder 12-16-2009 03:08 AM

for me the point of my car is enjoyment and it being a stick sure as hell helps so i say go stick

Blackbirdws6 12-16-2009 07:15 AM

Go manual if you don't need to deal with bumper to bumper and don't plan on dragging the car too much. Auto is nice and consistent at the track and the best when sitting in traffic.

JL8Jeff 12-16-2009 07:47 AM

Keep it auto, have you fully researched what a pita it is to do the swap and get all the wiring and programming right? If you want a stick, sell the car and buy a stick, you'll be much happier. And for a DD in NJ the auto is definitely the better choice.

NastyEllEssWon 12-16-2009 07:58 AM

row row row your own....

LTb1ow 12-16-2009 09:25 AM

A big stall will emabress the sweet high school kids with their manual cars.

Shifting gears = HS guys.
Auto Tranny = race car.

:)

Foosh 12-16-2009 10:02 AM

But shifting is a classic thing, back in the muscle car days if your were an enthusiast, you got 4 on the floor! Thats like the tiptronic is fast but it takes some of the fun out of driving a truely fast car.

Exactly what I think. Keeping an automatic car auto and a manual car manual is just more practical. Sell your car and buy a stick car if you want one. Much much less work in the end.
