Dead starter FTL Manual trans FTW!
So my starter died and I have been pushing the car and dumping the clutch in 2nd to get it to start. So how bad is that for my clutch?
|
Starter is cheaper to replace than a clutch no?
|
any slipping like that isnt good for it but you gotta do what you gotta do. starters are cheap and easy to swap
|
Yeah I did it once to get home from my cousins house. I didn't plan on driving it today but my dads car was giving me more problems (running terrible and stalling alot) so I
just pushed it down the drieway and dumped the clutch I needed to get to work. I'll drive the truck until I get it fixed. |
My $0.02:
If you have to get your ass to work, do what you have to do. But make replacing the starter a priority- do it ASAP. |
Cuz I didn't want it to be a slow anchor  And damn dude relax I'll put a starter in it tomorrow some of us have jobs you know and I needed to get there so I could make the money to buy the starter and not get fired, but don't worry I'll push it down the street again tomorrow cuz Im cheap and lazy, in fact I plan on doing that the rest of the time I own the car. Jeez Ill get it fixed just didnt have the time today.
Edit: where did ltslows post go? As stated I had to get to work and it was the most reliable car avail at the time being I wouldn't do it other wise. |
its not too bad to fix. 2 bolts u can get to from the bottom to drop the starter, its smaller than the Gen 1 SBC 60lb starters lol and the wires arent too bad to get to. be sure to disconnect ur (+) battery terminal before working on it!
|
A lot of starter problems aren't even the starter going bad but rather the solenoid or brushes in the solenoid not giving enough amperage to fire the starter. Try taking the solenoid apart to see if you can just clean, replace or even reverse the brushes to get better contact.

Well had a few nice little suprises working on the car today  5 trips to autozone and 2 starters later it just cranks away wolnt start  Alos found a nice big suprise under the car :)
|
Well looks like Im doing an oil change and crank sensor tomorrow
|
could also shim starter i have done it on a few chevys. starter to close n works to hard and dies easier. should of tapped it but i was in ur shoes a while back my jeep starter went bad. i was to lazy to change it i had a pickup with push bar push me down my street to go to work. i did that for a week lol. at work i parked on a slant and rolled down it. i must say that is wat makes stick better than auto in my eyes.

I got it figured put now guys Ron was a big help. My crank sensor wires were chaffed and touching and one was broken, the rest broke while I played with the wires, just solidered them up now and am trying to figure out how to route the wires to prevent it from happening again.
|
Glad you got it back together.

Ok so I fixed the 3 wires, IDK how they even worked in the first place because they were all bare and touching. Fixed and rerouted between block and dipstick tube also wire tied the harness to the dipstick tube to keep it off the block and headers. Back up and running now.

thats good news! glad i could help ya out dude
