So I finally rode in a stock 305 RS
I thought they were a little bit faster. I mean it had no omph at all. It was an 89 TBI. I had a 305 RS and it had some motor work done so it kinda boogied. I kinda want one now, just to cruise around in. haha. Just thought I'd share that.
P.S. If anyone has a 92 RS they want to just sign the title over for let me know haha ;-) |
theyre like 17 second cars depending on options... my jeep took a third gen down at atco
|
not the fastest things on the road but those things do not die. i'd drive one.
|
I went against one down atco, wasnt impressed at all
|
my 88 is a 305, now carbd tho, and i got spanked by a gas f250 wen i had my 92 305tbi RS
|
I really wasnt expecting it to be that slow, i only have a v6. I just expected a close race, not a 2.3 sec difference
|
Mid-late 70s to early 90's Fbodies won't be fast, with maybe a few exceptions. Even the 350 cars.
|
 What do you expect? It's a sub 200hp boat anchor of a motor in a 3400lb+ car. It's a junk motor when it comes to performance(Oh no, I hope the TBI guys on thirdgen.org don't see this! )

305 lulz

v6's have nowhere near 2.3 seconds on a 305. a 3800 v6 will put down a low 16 second 1/4 mile at best |

puts up a good race against a 92 firebird V6 3.1L with intake and headers

As an owner of the wonderful LO3 motor, I'm willing to admit it has its weak points. No power being at the top of the list. But, you can not kill these motors.
Mine was beat to hell when I got it. With a small tune up (and a set of keys) it started right up. When I pulled the valve covers a year after owning it, and pulled out 3 separate chunks of carbon build up. Each being at least 1 in long by 1/2 in wide. Overall, solid motors. |
Not much of a difference in performance between a 305 tbi and a 3.1 car of the same year. The 3.1 car will handle better and get slightly better gas mileage. The throttle body injection wasnt the problem, but more the cylinder heads and low compression

Well now that I had the experience of riding in a stock LO3 305 car, and I've driven a stock L36 3.8, and I did not feel much of a speed difference. I honestly wouldn't be able to say which car I think would win.
|
And hence, third gens suck majorly.
|
I think it has decent power for what it is. You went for a ride in a 20 year old car, you cant really expect much for a stock vehicle. Like WildBilly(sorry for not knowing your actual name!)said there wasnt much power to be had in that stretch of time, in any Chevy let alone an F-body.
On that note, I cant wait to get to the track with mine to see how fast(slow!) it goes with the stock gears. According to the tag is has 2.73's, I'll go out once with it to see how it is and then throw some 3.73's in it. Its too much of a dog around town. May even go through the trans while Im at it. |
I think my motorcycle makes just as much horsepower as an LG4 Carb'd 305. And I've owned one too!

if he has an intake and catback then i can see it shaving a few tenths. |

First of all they have more style than any 4th gen and I owned a 97 z28 w/ a 6 spd. Don't get me wrong the drive train in 4th gens are great but what a B%ch it is to work on. You guys are only talking about the TBI motor that were installed in pick up trucks also. What about the TPI cars? The later years,91-92, ran low 14's out of the factory. I have seen stock LT1's run the same time. I knew someone w/ a bolt on IROC, 5.7 TPI run low 13's and w/ a shot of nitrous low to mid 11's. So,again, why do 3rd gens suck?
Also we are all F-body owners. Why does it seem if you don't own a 4th gen or 1st to early 2nd gen your car is crap! |
