Time for a new project?
Hey everyone,
Last summer I sold my 91 RS Convertible/LT1 with the intention of buying a 2010 Camaro 2SS/RS. Well, 6 months later, I am buying a house & getting married so I dont really want to get into a new loan with a $500/month payment. That leaves me with a couple options: 1) Buy a decent running/driveable car for 5-10k to use as my toy and upgrade it as I go. 2) Buy something that needs work for a little less money and fix it up. Then upgrade it as I go. Now this may not sound like much of a decision to some of you, but I really enjoy working on cars. Almost as much as driving them. So fixing the fixxer upper wouldnt be a chore for me. The main drawback to getting the car that needs work would be that it would probably be awhile before I got the car on the road. I know I will be happy either direction I decide to go, but I cant decide. Also, I have the problem of deciding what car to get. I have always loved 3rd gens, but I think it might be time to step up to a LS1 car. I had thought about getting a vette for a short time, but when I saw how much upgrade parts cost for them, I ruled them out. Any thoughts will be appreciated. Thanks, Mark B |
I think it really depends on how badly you will want something to drive this year. I sold my 70 SS396 last year and got lucky with it being a lousy summer so it wasn't too big of a deal. I also have the 2000 SS as my daily driver so I still have something to enjoy. But I already have the itch to get another 1st or 2nd gen to drive so I'm looking for something that will be driveable for the summer. I imagine you will be pretty busy this year with buying the house and getting married so a project may end up sitting longer than you think it will. And then out of nowhere you suddenly have kids!

That would be a third gen worth driving. |
I think given your circumstances, option one makes a little more sense economically. As said, you are going to be quite busy with the wedding and new house and a project might take a long time to get underway.

I think you save your money, get through the other high priced events first, make sure the job can support the newly acquired items, your new "hobby" (ie. marriage), and still put money in the savings account. Once that's done, then start saving for an F-body that will be fun to wrench on, drivable, and without costing a lot to fix. A "running project" is one that can be enjoyed while worked on, as long as you have the money and the time to do it.
