What makes over 5000hp and is not a race car?

The Union Pacific No. 844. It was the last steam locomotive built for Union Pacific and is one of the last surviving and still operational original steam locomotives in the world. It doesn't run all that much, but I heard it was passing through so I went down to the station this morning to watch it leave at 8am.

It was pretty impressive. It stands nearly twenty feet tall, and the engine and tender alone weigh nearly one million pounds. I can't even imagine how amazing it must have been in the '20's, '30's, '40's, and '50's to see them all lined up at the train station.

Very impressive piece of machinery.

Tru2Chevy 04-27-2010 09:13 PM

That's pretty awesome Steve!

That is sooooooo cool. Man that is crapload of Seafoam blowing out of that engine! When I worked at Flemington, there was a steam engine you could ride on and I think there still is one that also runs around New Hope. Do they give rides on this engine?

enRo 04-27-2010 09:19 PM

Steam locomotives are a badass piece of machinery.

The engineer said it's not that much anymore due to the insurance company raising the cost, but he said it will run once this summer as a passenger train from Denver to Cheyenne and back. I'm really thinking about saving up for it. Here's a link;

The 60' time was like two minutes lol It takes a while for them to get moving, but the engineer said she'll cruise at 75mph like a Rolls-Royce :)

The New Hope & Ivyland still runs regularly.

The Black River & Western in Flemington still does operate passenger excursions as well as frieght, but the steam engine # 60 has been taken apart to be rebuilt and they ran out of money.
