GM Card Points On A Certified Used GM Car?

Hey all,
Does anyone know if you can use GM Card points on a Certified Used GM car, or can they only be applied to a new car purchase? I honestly don't know anything about the card; my parents have had one for years, but my dad has an '05 Audi and my mom just bought an '09 Honda so they won't be using the $$ they have saved up on their GM card anytime soon and I'm ~sort of~ in the market for a new car. They're willing to give me the points, so I'm just wondering if I can only buy new or if I can look at used and save some $$. Thanks in advance!

I asked the customer service rep on twitter, Ill let you know. I want to say no, but I could be wrong.

I don't think they are transferable either.

Hmm, my dad told me they were able to transfer theirs to my brother when he bought his minivan a few years ago, so hopefully they still are doing it. Maybe things have changed since the restructuring over at GM?

Yea, I know the earnings used to be transferable, I know people who gave their points up to others.

Maybe with the 'new' program they instituted a few years back. I still have the old one and I did not think they were transferable.

A friend and I both got the card in 2000 or 2001, and he was able to transfer earnings.

Well, I finally found the info I was looking for, but I'm kinda bummed. The points ARE transferable to an immediate family member (spouse, child, etc.), but they must live at the same address as the card owner - that won't work for me.

And, I found you can't use the points on a Certified Used car, only a new vehicle - that won't work for me either. Dammit.

In case anyone is wondering about the rules, check out this link - https://gmcard.preprod.drmp.gm.com/G...rogramRules.do

And a lot of times their is a cap on how much you can use from your card towards a certain model when buying new.

BonzoHansen 07-04-2010 12:30 PM

I didn't know I could transfer them at all. Huh. Although really I can't anyway.

that is the 'new' program. I have no model limit on my earnings, just the annual cap ($500) and they expire in 7 years. But I think I earn points slower.

Alright, GM's Customer Service twitter account answerd me back on saturday, but I just saw it today. They said no, it doesnt count towards cert per owned.

How do you know you have no model limit, it says right on the Chevrolet website what the limits are on each model? Is their a different type of GM card? Mine has to be 8-10 years old now and I started losing earnings last year. I had dealers tell me you couldn't use all your card earnings on some models.

BonzoHansen 07-05-2010 08:10 PM

I am grandfathered in under the 'old' plan. When they rolled out the new plan they gave current card holders a choice of old rules or new rules. Note the 'new' plan (link above dates March 23, 2000) says you earn 5% unlimited, but there are usage caps. I can only earn up to $500 per year, x7 years $3500, no usage cap. I can't find the old rules online.

damn..i was going to give my earnings to my gf next year since shes thinking about getting the new convertible camaro.

even if we live together..i cant give her my points since she isnt technically 'my spouse'?

is 'spouse' defined only by marriage or does live-with girlfriend suffice? read that link, didnt see any clarification...
