Need help with tire key!!!
Hey yall, im about to buy new rims for my car but i really need help with my rear tire keys. I got a 1997 V6 Camaro and my rear tires have the locking lug nuts and i dont have the key. Im 99% its the stock ones that come with the car but not positive. So if anyone can help me with this, has a key, or knows how to get them off (Even if it has to bang a socket on, i dont have the tools to do it myself) please help me out, would be GREATLY appreciated
Here is the only pic i got of it. http://img710.imageshack.us/img710/4748/06192010001.jpg |
most tire shops like a mavis or STS will have the impact sockets that are reverse that they can bang on to remove. I would just ask how much it will cost first.
|
Yeah, but i kinda wanted to avoid that and was just wondering if anyone had something i could use

you can get a wheel lock removal kit for under 50 bucks. most shops will charge you at least 25 to do it so you might as well get the kit yourself. most of those keys are unique or at least varied enough that finding another key to fit yours is going to be tough.
you might be able to rent one from an auto store too. theyre easy to use. just bang on the outside of the socket and remove like normal. |
i used a old 1/2" drive 11/16 deep well socket I think. With the knowledge that I will destroy the socket, I hammed it onto the lug nut.
In retrospect, its better to just take it to a shop. You run the risk of making it worse or hitting the rim with the hammer. So don't listen to me. :) |
If the wheel locks are GM accessories then any GM shop should have a master set. I haven't had one car that our set didn't work on. If they are after-market then you will need to use a different method.
The reverse thread removers work good as long as you have an impact gun and I've also hammered sockets on to remove locks. |
get a 12 point socket you don't care about just big enough to slam onto it with a hammer....get a ratched and a breaker bar and it should come off...if it doesn't you'll need a shop

Nice giant worthless blurry pic. God ****** cell pics are becoming a giant peeve of mine. Sorry, I digress.
Any decent tire shop shoul be able to get them off. Then throw them away and put regular lugs nuts on. Lock lugs only stop car owners. |
Yeah its quite annoying, i guess ill just make some calls
|
I've done it 3 ways:
1.) Hammered a socket on 2.) Welded a socket on 3.) Gator socket! http://www.endeavorproducts.com/ |
gm should have a master set, there are probably 20 or so unique patterns
