I don't understand GM....

So I see a commercial for the Corvette, a car GM barely makes any money on....a car that's really set for a niche market...yet I've YET to see a commercial for the Camaro, a car that has a broader audience.

I don't get it....

greenformula92 07-13-2010 09:04 PM

i agree...all though the commercial was good if you talking about the one just aired during the all star game

Frosty 07-13-2010 09:05 PM

Yeah, the ZR1 commercial? It was pretty cool but they don't even mention ZR1.

Who cares about the 'vette, it's a car that been declining in sales for the last 4 yrs I think and GM barely makes a buck off of them....push the damn Camaro(even if the Corvette is leaps and bounds better than it, who cares).

greenformula92 07-13-2010 09:09 PM

i get what your saying, i don't know why they don't push the camaro.....ford pushes the hell out of the mustang and look at thier sales. wait till the 2012 commercial come out with the new 5.0 with HP numbers to match the camaro

BonzoHansen 07-13-2010 09:14 PM

It's all brand recognition. That is why they make 'halo' cars.

Besides I saw 2 chevy commercials during the pre game

I get that but why not push the Camaro? A car that brings in higher margins and appeals to a broader base? I've seen Challenger commercials, a ton of Mustang commercials and not a single Camaro commercial.

Am I way off here for thinking GM is dropping the ball....again?

BigAls87Z28 07-13-2010 09:27 PM

Corvette is a halo car. While Corvette sales have dropped, its still the best selling car in its class.

Camaro has been #1 for the last year or so in sales. The new Corvette and Regal commercials are some of the first stuff done by the new head of marketing for GM. He's been at the helm for a month or so now, so give it time. He reversed a lot of the previous persons moves on letting go certain marketing companies and retaining others.

BTW, Corvette brings in profit, but at 35k units a year, its not in massive amounts when compared to the trucks/suv's.

Not sure if Camaro is in the black yet, but they are seeing high transaction prices as most are highly optioned V6 or SS mdoels.

LTb1ow 07-13-2010 09:27 PM

They should make a reality show of the life and struggles of the Camaro fanboi, BiGal.

Frosty 07-13-2010 09:28 PM

Yeah, I saw the Regal commercial. I REALLY like this car. I've yet to drive the one we have but it really is a sharp car.

BigAls87Z28 07-13-2010 09:31 PM

It is a cool car. I really, really...REALLY want to get my hands on a turbo car soon. I really hope I can.

Slow-V6 07-13-2010 09:48 PM

Maybe Gm thinks that since the Camaro was in 2 of the biggest movies of the past decade that it doesnt need to run comercials for it. Thats what I think. The Mustang has the comercials and they tried to star the mustang in the new knight rider but that show tanked. I see camaro toys everywere and also see camaros everywere. I think its doing just fine.

People care about the vette. Its an icon. Thats how they get you to come in. I bet you alot of people who go check out the Vette end up with a Camaro instead. Maybe because its cheaper or what not. I went to the dealer by me to check out the Z06. Afterwards I checked out the new camaro.

?

Would you rather see Camaro comercials or have it star in a summer blockbuster?

I could care less about the movies, saw the first Transformers movie, haven't bothered since.

I still don't understand why there isn't at least a quick commercial for it...the sales WILL cool down...and now that Ford is pushing the new V6 Mustang and it's power/fuel economy some people are starting to look at it. I'm on a bunch of different sites that aren't car specific and some people have no idea what the new Camaro brings, they only know what the new Mustang brings due to the commercials...there's something to be said about that.

.

But the hudreds of millions of people who saw the movies do. Makes me wonder how many camaros were bought because of the movies?

Frosty 07-14-2010 08:26 AM

Probably as many CTS's after them being in Bad Boy's 2 and The Matrix Reloaded.....

BigAls87Z28 07-14-2010 08:31 AM

CTS sure wasn't the main character in a major motion picture. I agree that Chevrolet needs to talk about the camaro. But I doubt that they will with the two new stars showing up, Cruze and Volt.

I think if the Camaro is still the star in the new transformers movie it will still sell the way GM wants it to. And there were a ton of Transformer 7 eleven comercials that had the bumble bee Camaro in it while the movie's were out. Its not like it doesnt have any publicity. I also hear a bunch of camaro comercials on 610 WIP and you also see it on the ones with Howie Long.

Frosty 07-14-2010 08:35 AM

Like I said, I'm on a few different other non specific car sites and people can talk about the Mustang because the saw it on the commercial(s)....just saying that GM should follow that...

Now that the Mustang is finally packing some power in both trims it's time GM gets their accomplishments out there instead of leaving it up to Motor Trend and a few movies to show off the car.

Just my opinion, I'm by no means a marketing major or a wiz but it just seems like common sense.

Slow-V6 07-14-2010 08:43 AM

I might see 5 2010-2011 Mustangs a day and they are all V6's and I always see about 10-15 new camaros. I understand you are worried about the car not getting comercial time. I would like to see comercials also but to me it seems the car is outselling the new mustang. Thats something the camaro hasnt done in a very long time if ever.

Frosty 07-14-2010 08:46 AM

Oh I hear ya, the Camaro is selling well right now...but how long will that last? Resting on what happens right now can hurt you in the future(GM knows that ALL too well lol).

The thing is that GM needs to follow a media mix type model for marketing the new Camaro. For cars like the Buick Lacrosse and ZR1 the type of people buying them will be primarily watching TV for entertainment, so spending a lot on commercials makes sense. For the Camaro, the type of people in its target market do other things in their spare time as they are younger. So an online marketing campaign, contests, Facebook ads, etc will suck up some of the commercial budget. However, there still needs to be SOME Camaro commercials out there. Just not an all-or-nothing type campaign.

But GM, although not bankrupt, is still broke-ass. So they can't do much MR to figure it out.

LS1Hawk 07-14-2010 09:29 AM

While social media/online marketing has an impact, at the end of the day we are all couch potatoes and TV is still the largest advertising medium. I agree that while the Camaro is selling like hotcakes right now, it will cool off eventually. You see a Mustang commerical on just about every major network almost anytime of day. Advertising like that is what made the Mustang the most appealing pony car to young and old all these years. And that new Challenger commerical with George Washington driving it into battle against the redcoats is absolutely brilliant, makes the car take on a whole new life and gets people excited over it. Camaro should not have to lose momentum.

Knipps 07-14-2010 09:36 AM

I've seen Camaro commercials for the V6, nothing for the SS. Although I'm sure that's Tony's main complaint.
