Some thoughts on a swap
Ok so i want some opinions on what i am thinking. So i will be doing a motor swap eventually probably during the winter. ill have plenty of time to save up for the swap. what i was originally thinking was getting a 350 TBI to put in my 91 formula. I loved my firebird when i first got it, and it has been starting to run sluggesh, and i have felt a signifcant decrease in power.
Some of my thoughts on a swap replace the 305 or have it rebuilt 350 tbi 350 TPI 383 stroker or 327 stroker and of course ive thought about LT1/LS1 for the trans id like to do the whole t56 tranny. now i think the whole LT1/LS1 is way outta my league and price range which i know will be a lot more expansive because of the mods im going to have to do. as much as id like to do this i dont think i am going to be able to do this for my first swap. doing the whole 305 is not very appealing to me... so that leaves 350 tbi, tpi or stroker. if i do the 327 i already have the motor. just need to get a kit for it, but ive read that the cylinder walls are really thin and that its a hindorance. so im a little leary about that. id love a 383 stroker but i dont quite understand the whole stroker thing so i think i am just going to do 350 tbi or tpi and i think that is going to be based on which set up i can get at a better price, and which is going to be easier for the instal, even though i hear its harder to make decent power out of the older motors. so what is the easiest way to reach my end goal of 350-400 HP to the wheels and i know i am going to have to do suspension and axle work so what am i looking at spending so i can start budgeting for this. Id like to get all the parts before i start this and i understand that im going to have some oh ****s, and run into problems that ill have to run out and buy a part but im trying to alieveate this as much as possible. so id like to thank you for taking the time of reading this and thanks ahead of time for all the help. |
bought 12k to do it right
a stroker means the crank is a longer stroke then stock which, in turn, increases displacement. |
What is the budget, what is your skillset? Is the car a 305 TBI car now?
A 327 is not an option unless you mean a late model 5.3L |
I suggest LSx route and by LSx I mean get a LS1 and build it up. Then your T56 going to a nice rearend. I only say this because this what I'm going to do. I know hawksthirdgen has LS1 with T56 for sale, or seperate.
+1 for LS1 |
Post your budget

well the budget is endless depending on how long i save up for the build. right now its 0 by the time of the swap probably 6 or 7k but id like to stay under 3500. skill set novice can learn quickly definitely going to need help.
Yes the 305tbi is in the car now. I like the idea of the LS1 but thats going to be a build ill have to wait until next winter to do. |
