rough idle, bogging down

for the past week the maro has been idling low at about 500 rpms and very rough. today i found that the screws that keeps the carb cover on the carb were loose and gas was leaking out so i tightened them. now when i go to accelerate the car bogs at around 1100-1400 rpms.

could the carb just need to be tuned or could it be timing or vacuum?
it is a 2 barrel Rochester. any ideas would be appreciated, thanks

"screws that keeps the carb cover on the carb"?

Lots of screws on them there things. Have a pic?

If the screws that hold the carb together were loose you probably lost a gasket as well. Any vacuum leaks will cause it to run poorly. You might want to pick up a rebuild kit for the carb and start from there.

I thought the same?

Rochester 1 and 2bbl carbs have screws that hold the top on, it's not like a Holley. I've rebuilt a few of them over the years, you just have to be careful and use the correct gaskets. Usually the rebuild kits have gaskets for multiple years so you need to look at your old one carefully. I've also flipped a gasket around by mistake and it won't run too well when that happens.

replaced all plugs, plug wires, distibutor rotor and tuned the carb and still hesitates. doesnt idle rough anymore though

Check all your vacuum hoses to make sure none are cracked. The hesitation could be extra air getting in somewhere and throwing off the mixture before the pump shot. Did you check the float level to make sure it's set correctly?
