where to get a cheapish/decent helmet?
i really want to go to island next friday night, i wanna see what my car can do and it will be my first time at a track (other than swap meet). i just dont have a helmet =/ i was looking at summit and they're around 100-150.
also i was wondering how you determine hat size? which is how the small, medium, large helmets are measured by. |
100-150 will be the cheaper end of the good ones that will pass tech inspection. if you want to go see how it is without dropping that money, the tracks rent helmets...
you measure hats by wrapping a tape measure around your head at around the middle of the forehead. or just go into a hat store at the local mall and try some on ... |
how much is it to rent a helmet?
|
pep boys has helmets
|
i dont think they have the right snell ratings to pass tech
|
i dont remember island looking at my helmet any time ive been there, they just ask if i have one

Go to cycle gear in Edison. They have specials all the time.. I just saw 3 helmets that were cheaper than $100 and snell/dot rated.

helmets are safety equipment. it all depends how much you value your life. 150 is cheap.

Cheap helmets are for cheap heads. Now that we got the cheesy 70's motto out of the way.
Buy a decent helmet, seriously. I think Pep Boys does sell Snell rated helmets which is what your looking for. DOT rating means squat. And don't buy a used one, and don't drop it. You don't need a $600 Aria or Simpson but get a decent HJC. |
I got my KBC from a website for $70 on closeout.
|
i had to buy one at etown last time i went for $140 and its snell approved its a HJC helmet... not the best but im sure it will work if it needs to. Another weird thing is that they wouldn't rent me a helmet because my car was faster than 14.0 didn't get that. either way i have it now. I was using an old dirtbike helmet i had but i guess that wasnt good enough anymore.
|
the cheap hjc ones at motorcycle stores do NOT have the correct ratings for the nhra, you have to buy one at a track or summit/jegs etc so that you know it is rated properly for nhra...
|
My bad. I was under the impression he just wanted a helmet to be legal at the track not a NRHA approved helmet.
|
if you go faster than 14.0 i think it needs to be snell approved no??

My new Summit catalog has NHRA Simpsons for $250, G-Force's for $150, and RCI's $109 brand new. They are all Snell M2005 and SFI-41.1 and up. If that isn't good enough to run your street car than maybe you should go to Atco where they let use a normal helmet. |

try to get snell 2010. i think once its over 10 years old, its no longer good to use at a track. i think that was the case with my snell95 one i bought in 99. after 2005 it was useless for racing.

I guess it's an Island thing because they never checked the rating on my helmet at Atco or Englishtown and I've been going since I was 19 and I'm 35.
