Entry level DSLR
 

Lately I've been looking at cameras because I want to get a nicer entry level digital slr camera. I'm probably going to best buy because I'm going to put it on a bestbuy card and finance it. With that being said I'm looking to spend in the 500 range. I'd be willing to go a little more if its worth it. I now a few people on here are into shooting so what would be the best choice in that price range? I was looking at the rebel xs but I was just wondering what else was out their. Soo any opinions?

I have the xti which the older model of the xs. To be perfectly honest I love it. I've thought about upgrading but can't get around to doing it because I'm so use to it now. In my opinion you can't fo wrong with a rebel. But my mom had a nikon which is a little more fancy then mine but for hobby shootingvyou would never see the difference. So check out the nikon and cannon and okay with then in the store and go with the one that feels comfortable. You won't go wrong with either brand

Yes the canon rebel XS series are very nice and beginner friendly. It has more features on it than youll probably ever use. I bought that over the nikon d40(they seem to be like rivals almost, also an excellent camera) because it has a continuous shooting mode, like a machine gun. Its cool for catching action shots and stuff. It takes very good pictures in general too. Also its dead reliable, holds a charge for a long time, and processes very fast. Had for over 2 years

And the D40 is in that price range? I'll have to take a look at that too. I was leaning towards the Rebel because I always here good things about them. Just wanted to see what other's opinions were before I go toi the store.

Def check out both. I garuntee it'll be hard to find difference in quality. So like I said find the one that feels comfortable to you. Both great cameras.

ISO 800 or 1600 sweet beginner camera.. im still learning as well and its quite worth the price ... but hey.. its not the equipment.. its what you put on both sides of the lens that count ;)

I also have a rebel XS, and I love it. I've taken somewhere in the neighborhood of 2800 - 3000 shots with it since Christmas. Biggest thing to think about is saving money for other lenses once you get used to shooting with the kit lens. It's very easy to spend more on one lens than you did on the body and kit lens together.

That was the only real adjustment for me. I had an SLR-like point and shoot before I got the XS (a Canon S3 IS) which had a 12x zoom (36-432mm), so going to the kit 18-55mm lens was an adjustment. I'm shopping for another lens now, just haven't made a decision and pulled the trigger yet.

yea my d40 was like mid $400 range, the wife got me it for christmas so cant say exactly but i've taken at least 4 to 5k pics with it and it still works awesome. the lenses get very expensive on both canon and nikon but i've found that all you really need is the 18-55mm and the 55-200mm . they will shoot just about everything you need. i've used both canon and nikon and i personally am more comfortable with nikon. hope i helped in any way

Thanks for the help fellas. I've seen how much lenses go for. I realize i would eventually have to buy a different one but that wouldnt be until later on down the line.. if i even stick with the hobby shooting long enough. So far im between the Rebel XS and the D40. Anybody know anything or have any first hand experience with the Pentax K-x? it's a little more then i'd want to spend but a lot of the reviews for them are very positive.

Hmm.. 250 is pretty cheap. I'll have to check that out thanks man.

Anyone know if any of the DSLRs will take an older lens? My Dad had a 35mm Canon AE1 setup and has a few lenses and I was wondering if I could use them with a new camera.

My g/f's mother has a canon AE1 set up with a 50mm and a xx-250 i believe.. something along thos lines.. so i looked it up cause she offered to give me the lenses and i believe they sell some kind of adapter but your auto focus will not work... thats as far as i got and i gave up on it with out the idea of auto focus.. ive tried manuel focus and its just too much for me haha..

Yea, as a direct fit only the EOS series lenses will work on Canon DSLRs
