Tire news

Not technical so it belongs here.

Since I have been granted permission to race at the Nats this year, plus I'm sick of fearing for my life on the current tires on the Camaro, I looked into the matter. The tires on the Camaro are notoriously horrible with traction, as anyone who has driven with me or near me knows. I can spin at 60mph - I kept thinking the trans was slipping or something. Well, in addition to being Continental ContiContact EcoPlus Touring tires, they were made in the 24th week of 2000 according to the code. I found the stock wheels in the basement, and they have Goodyear Eagle GS-C's with better tread than the tires on the car now. (Dad had told me they were bald, that's why he replaced them with the Conti's and threw the Goodyears on the stockers). The Goodyears were made the 33rd week of 2000. So much for the idea of switching those ones for racing....

Long and short of it - Maybe dad believes me now that the Camaro should really get some new tires, considering either way they're about 4 years overdue for a change (Neither are cracking or anything though).

Great story nick. I think they should take away your "member of the year title" for such a useless post.

Good. He's right. Give them a viking burial and then replace them.

He's right? He's the one who doesn't want to replace 10 year old tires :-?

BigAls87Z28 10-10-2010 11:34 PM

GSC's should have been retired 2 years after they were produced.
Time to tell dad that tires gotta go.

NJ Torque 10-10-2010 11:49 PM

The GSC's will not hook....even if new.

My bad. I read "My dad believes I should get new tires." DERP DERP.

My point still stands. Viking burial, new tires.

Just get something that is a little more suited for the car. I cannot believe they even make those tires in that size origianlly. Its time for something that can actually hold up. That video you sent me of those tires in the rain was breath taking to say the least.

DaSkinnyGuy 10-11-2010 07:40 PM

Nick you know the tires I have now hook, you've experience what my previous tires were like. For the price you can't beat the deal, and im an M6 with 4:10's.

Anti_Rice_Guy 10-11-2010 08:51 PM

It's rough enough just to convince dad to not get tires similar to the ones on there now, I'm hoping to get some nice burnouts in though. I mean I have 8 tires that are 10 years old!

And bottles are for babies! I'm not a fan of drag racing often, I'm partial to a fun street car that handles.

Wanna see old tires? Walk through a good sized cruise night. I see 2 generation old Radial TAs on cars. So mid 80s. Just this year I've seen guys on earlier versions from the late 70s. And last time I went out I saw a car on Belted TAs. Holy crap early 70s. These silly guys and their 50-miles-a-year-to-the-local-cruise-night cars. C3 vette guys seem to be the worst offenders.

My sister got Michelin's on her '02 RSX about... 3 years ago. And she drives to manhattan ~2x a week for an internship, and drives to and from nordstroms 5-6x a week for her job. With the amount of tread left on hers, it looks as though she hasn't driven it about at all!

SO, for 200-400$ more per tire, I'd personally say Michelin / BF Goodrich are the best bang for the buck. It'll sting now, but be the best investment after the 4-6 years of having em with no problems =]
