BMW v8 engine carnage

Not much of a story on this, 2009 550i with 9600miles on it, yeah that is right 9600 was bought at an auction by my dealer, another tech on my team was on the test drive for because it was going to be a certified pre-owned (CPO), will be tommorrow once the motor goes back in, stayed late since the new engine just came in and transfered everything over.

Never have i ever seen a piston split in half or a freaking wrist pin break like that. . . . The rod must have went out the hole on the side since the only trace of that was on the rod bearing on the crank. The head did not need to come off because we knew it was mangaled so didnt want to lose time and take it off even though i would have loved to see the nightmare in there.

i will take some more tommorrow forgot my memory card

holy cow. if I'm not mistaken, that is even before the first oil change on some BMWs. I know my friend's Mini didn't call for a Oil change till almost 15k

sweetbmxrider 10-15-2010 07:23 AM

Psh, you can go waaayyyy longer, like that guy that had his valve cover opened at 60K cause he heard a ticking noise, he was spot on with the timing for the oil change

I know a girl that only got 30k out of a new Camry because she thought the 100k tune up means no oil changes until then.

MyFirstZ 10-16-2010 09:49 AM

lol they seem to do pretty well with that interval, except for this one.

The only guess to what happened it te thing hydrolocked. . . . I wish we knew the story besides being at an auction. For all we know the car was repoed and they guy did it.

15k is also just when BMW is going to pay for it, you can do inbetween changes

everything is ok though the 23k motor is now in

I thought it was grimey that they were putting a higher mileage motor in the car, but I still thought the same thing.

My question is, who foots the bill? Is that a warranty item even though the car wasn't owned by a customer?

MyFirstZ 10-17-2010 09:34 PM

yeah i am not sure exactly who pays the bill on that part the dealer or the shop . . . . i think BMW covers parts and shop covers labor.

i will find out exactly tommorrow prices and everything
