Worst Idea Ever

Go help Loot the Spectrum - nothing good can possibly come from this!

Quote:

Here comes the real test for the image of Philadelphia sports fans.

In a promotion that must have been thought up by someone with ties to Pamplona's running of the bulls, fans can get into the soon-to-be-demolished Spectrum and leave with anything they get their mitts on.

No jackhammers or forklifts will be allowed, but this event still figures to make Eagles fans' legendary pelting of Santa Claus with snowballs look like a peace march. The arena was home to the 76ers, the Flyers and numerous Bruce Springsteen concerts.

Here's the gist of the official announcement from the arena:

. . . Comcast-Spectacor is allowing fans one-last opportunity to go inside the Spectrum on Saturday, November 6 from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. for a "If You Can Carry It, You Can Keep It" event. Admission is $25 which includes a commemorative Spectrum crystal, as well as the opportunity to go onto the arena floor and take home a personal souvenir of the Spectrum.

Items available for the "If You Can Carry It, You Can Keep It" event include Spectrum folding chairs, used televisions, some office furniture, couches, computer equipment, and other collectibles. Items are first-come, first-served. Patrons will be allowed to take as much as they can carry (up to four chairs per person) with no re-entry into the arena. Tools and hand carts are prohibited. A portion of the proceeds benefits the Comcast-Spectator Foundation

I wish I could be there.

Blacdout96 11-04-2010 12:26 PM

DAMN IT!!!!! I want to be there for that!

BonzoHansen 11-04-2010 12:28 PM

I'd like to push the trigger when they blow it up. :)

BigRocsFirebird 11-04-2010 12:34 PM

i heard about this on the radio hahaha

How exactly is this the worst idea ever? I doubt they will allow them to rush the place and massacre each other for chairs, so that's out of the question. Otherwise, extra money from stuff that would have been scrapped, and there's less garbage to clean up. Clearly, a crappy idea.

redsoxsstink 11-04-2010 12:44 PM

i can see it already.... people using chairs to fights over chairs they held season tickets for blah blah blah years, that their grandfather inherited over 94 years ago... whateverrrrr if it works out for them great if it doesnt it will be interesting to watch. alll i can see in people rushing in like a black friday walmart

sweetbmxrider 11-04-2010 12:47 PM

yeah i mean they have been demo-ing it for awhile now. its not like there's a ton of **** people can ramsack and potentially get hurt on. i would wanna go

Most epic moment for me is when the roof leaked on me in 2003.

LOL.

It is funny watching Rocky from '76 listening to them talking about the glorious Philadelphia Spectrum, and seeing how it looked 34 years ago.

Frosty 11-04-2010 02:10 PM

Don't forget about the glass blowing out a few years before that

the rats that ran over my feet at a flyer playoff game were sweet.

I've been there for games and concerts. it was a dump, the hockey fans might have been worse. farewell

How they destroy it is inconsequential, as long as it goes away.

Frosty 11-04-2010 02:47 PM

I can picture it now...Scott jumping up on the seat screaming like a girl as the rat walks past.:D

Flyers fans (woot!) Are like our beloved Spectrum. Dirty, Dangerous, Eye Sores, and yet we Stand the testiment of Time. We, just like the Spectrum Came together in record time ( Built in about 1 1/4 year) And will forever be remembered.

It kinda brings a tear to my eye, the two Stanley Cups, the Cold War Show Down, Pelle Lindbergh, The movie for Rocky, all distant memories....

Sounds like they are charging the clean up crew to enter and do their job. Oh and heres a shiny crystal are you distracted yet?

usp55 11-08-2010 06:59 AM

So my buddy and I ended up going. Got there around 830 and waited in line for a solid 3hrs to get in. Everything went rather smooth to be honest. To get anything good you prob had to be there by atleast 6am. As we were waiting in line when someone walked out with something cool all you heard was a roar of boo's, typical philly fan stuff. The boards and glass went very quick and most people that grabbed them were only driving a sedan or mini suv. Idiots.

We just ended up with some of the folding chairs and a nice mini fridge.

Kinda hard to take one without tools. I would bet they are attached somewhat firmly.
