i got a compact scanner for 20 dollars. I've used it way more times than I thought I would. I'd say it was a good investment. Here is what I got:

http://www.amazon.com/Autel-MaxiScan...0633578&sr=8-1

It only says the code, so I got a free app on my iphone that explains the code.

You can get a Diablosport Predator that is VIN locked for cheap and it shows live data for most of the sensors. You can delete codes with it but you can't tune with it if it's VIN locked. But for decent quality scans you're better off with the Autotap or HPTuners.
