"new inspection" question

Anyone with an OBDII car take their car through inspection latley with no cat? Next week im going to look at a 2000 gtp with an off road down pipe (no cat) and the code deleted. I've heard the inspector just plugs into the OBDII port, and if all systems are ready and theres no codes, it passes. I know they dont check the tires, suspension, windshields or any of that anymore, but will they break out the stick and mirror to check for the cat? The car is out of state so it wont have any type of inspection sticker on it to ride out....

Any help would be great

it's a dice roll. they might.

When I took my wife's Liberty through Paramus inspection in September they scanned the PCM and also looked with the mirror for the cats - that was it. If the car is catless, maybe you can just tackweld some shields on to make it look like a cat is there? Or buy a catted y-pipe to swap in for inspection?

I am betting that they look and they may actually look very close. They did on my Firechicken when I went through inspection last time. The codes will be clean, so no issue there, but their noses might pick up on the fact that the car is "smelly" and that could prompt a closer look. Maybe even closer that what would normally be done. My car has cats "with some internal pieces missing" and they really really looked long and hard with the mirrors because it didn't add up. Their eyes are seeing one thing (no codes, cats installed), but their noses are screaming the opposite. I got the sticker and got out of there ASAP.

I agree with Bonzo, you are rolling the dice.

Just sacrifice the 3 hp and put a cat in.

maroman88 02-12-2011 01:20 PM

they do check for the cat still, since it is part of emmisions

I dont have a problem with having a cat on the car, i was planning on trading the downpipe to someone with a high flow cat'd downpipe. I just need to get it inspected 15 days after i register it, and that might not be enough time to find someone to trade. And im not spending the money for a new downpipe.

Guess i'll start looking now, for someone to trade. Dont really want to take the chance if you guys are saying they might still look.

I just went through inspection last month at a state facility and they didn't mirror my gtp(even though its all stock). It really depends on the facility you go to. Since it's a gtp(not too much of a hot rod in most peoples eyes), you'll probably be fine.

good point....now you got me thinking haha. is there a fine you have to pay if you go through without a cat on the car, or do they just reject you?

Maybe you can get a bill of sale and play stupid if they say anything

sweetbmxrider 02-13-2011 08:38 AM

You get a rejection sticker.

When my '97 was taken through they lifted it up in the air and looked under it with a mirror- and I have a high flow cat on there. The aftermarket exhaust probably tipped them off.

sweetbmxrider 02-14-2011 11:06 AM

So if you fail, they take your sticker and give you a piece of paper?

Last time I failed for something they ripped the old sticker in half and then gave me the paperwork

sweetbmxrider 02-14-2011 03:46 PM

Yup, a diagonal cut and some paperwork. joy.

98CamaroSS 02-14-2011 04:55 PM

Wow, how ridiculous NJ has become that we can't afford to give out rejection stickers?

BonzoHansen 02-14-2011 06:18 PM

Good. $0.02 less of my money being wasted.

Yup. No real point to them IMO.

sweetbmxrider 02-15-2011 10:22 AM

That 2 cents is just going to go somewhere else  probably to the extra paper!
