what's this...

changing my oil today i looked over everything in the engine bay to see if everything was arrite...found some unusual stuff i havent seen before..i just want to make sure its nothing serious. any help or pointers is appreciated.

http://i349.photobucket.com/albums/q...o/IMG_2026.jpg

ive heard of oil mixing with coolant and it looks like chocolate milk. when i changed the oil the oil looked fine, nothing out of the regular, but then whats this in my rad...something rusting somewhere?

this was on the cap

http://i349.photobucket.com/albums/q...o/IMG_2025.jpg

no idea what this is but the valve covers are discolored..all the discoloration is near the intake side of the valve cover. could that be a sign of the gaskets going?

http://i349.photobucket.com/albums/q...o/IMG_2027.jpg

typical problem for 3.8's?

thanks again for any help in advance.

Somebody converted that engine from Dex-Cool to green and didn't do a good job flushing the radiator. I'd flush it and re-fill.

maroman88 03-13-2011 05:43 PM

just needs a flush

not sure what you think is wrong with the valve cover... is it damp with oil a little? not a huge problem, but if it bothers u change the valve cover gaskets

madness410 03-13-2011 05:46 PM

arrite cool...just making sure it wasnt a sign of oil / coolant mixing.

yeah i guess the valve cover is damp with oil or something...i never noticed it before its on both valve covers

The gaskets on my prix leaked and they kind of looked like that. Look on the top of the intake and see if oil is pooling or anything.

yeah there was some liquid sitting in the intake at an usual spot. i couldnt get anything back to where it was to see what it was i figured it may have been rain water because of the recent weather. i'll check it out as soon as possible. but if it is oil is it the intake gaskets or the valve cover gaskets

battery ground/negative ( or is it positive? too many colors on it) terminal looks a little shady from here. I wouldnt be able to live with it looking like that...

i have a 3.8 and i have the same thing in my rad just like you. Mine came from the cap cause after i did a flush, i forgot to clean off the cap. my valve covers are the same to but i think it was from antifreeze when my heater line blew off and sprayed the top of the engine.

Could be that or a universal antifreeze. I think they are usually green or clearish.

i have one of those new batteries where the positive and the ground go into the same terminal.

joking.

but i think it was the angle the picture was at i had to redo the terminal connections last week to manage to hook up the new battery

i think i'll just flush the system out and see where it goes from there...either way its a general agreement that it needs to be flushed anyways.

Yeah, I wasn't certain but I remember the green being more opaque and the universal being more clear.

Either way, he needs a flush
