Anyone ever been to Deal's Gap?

My buddies and I are planning a road trip down to Deal's Gap (known also as the Tail of the Dragon) for some time in May. We have a pretty interesting group of cars too: my Camaro, a Miata, a Mazda 3, two S2000s, a BMW 335, a 300zx, and a B5 S4 (which I believe makes more whp than my cammed LS1!).

Anyways, anyone done it before? Top Gear UK was there a few months back, it's legit. Pic:

I live a few hours from it from what i have gathered is cops do patrol the road,of course im sure you may find yourself with a brief moment to enjoy the ride to a safe level. I have seen a few different groups of cars and bikes all start from near where i live and travel the journey to the tail of the dragon its amazing to watch a line of 100 corvettes go down the road as well as another time a group of high end cars, porsche, lambo, ferrari and a VW group.

Top gear also did a ride on the blue ridge parkway that runs from VA to SC and of course they got bored because the highest posted speed is 45mph some areas are 35mph. It is a nice ride i have done it a few times rarely have i seen cops.

The cops don't worry me. Racing is for the race track. It's still a public road and all. We'll be driving "spiritedly" at best.

SkinnyGuy- why haven't you made it out there? No interest?

I remember talking to j0n about it, he's been on it before (in the vette I think). My boss has been down it on his harley as well. From what I have heard it's usually fairly well patrolled and there is also often a fair amount of traffic, so the odds of you getting in any real "spirited" driving a likely slim.

There are TONS of videos on youtube of people in cars and on bikes driving all or part of it.

I'm supposed to be taking the Z down to the tail of the dragon in September.

I think that is why the plan is to go so early and while the gas prices are high. It is less likely to be trafficky. My buddy with the Miata went in 09 in the middle of July and had a blast. I'm not concerned about not being able to enjoy the road. You don't need to be maxing out your car's potential to enjoy a windy road. :)

There IS a big difference between being stuck behind a pickup and maxing out your car's potential though

Coming from the land of windy roads I know this all too well

I know what you mean, but from what I understand, the road is rarely traversed as a thoroughfare. People flock down to this road, and if the road is akin to the Garden State Parkway on Memorial Day weekend, then I doubt it would be such a destination spot. One of my buddies went down in 09 in the dead of July and said it was "the closest thing you can get to a racetrack on the street."

It's Tennessee for crying out loud!
