Finding out if a car has been reported as stolen?

Whats a definitive way to check if a car has been reported as stolen?

Thing is, im trying to get a title for a car I bought years back without one and i need to be certain before I can apply for a new title.

I dont fully trust carfax so im not even gonna bother with paying for that just yet.

I did run the VIN through this site and it came back saying its clean with them and not in their theft database.

If i was in NJ, id go to the local police and ask them to come look at the car and run the VIN for me, but Im not home, nor will I be for a few weeks.

Any law enforcement here able to run the VIN for me? PM obviously.
I dont wanna know any history of the vehicle other than that its clean, and not reported as stolen.

If for some crazy reason is it listed as stolen, I would have no problem turning it over to the proper authorities.

Ive had the car over 6 years, and prior to that, its been off the road since 1999.

For that Miata I found, I searched the plates on Florida's DMV website and found it was not reported stolen that way. Not sure if I could do that just with the VIN though.
