EGR Valve cleaning

I pulled off my EGR valve just now because I think it may have part in my drivability problems. The port is semi clogged with carbon build up and the diaphragm was somewhat sticking. When I manually squeeze the diaphram, the shaft squeaks and chatters...so I'm assuming it wasnt opening at all or maybe only a little. Anyway, I think I'm just going to buy a new gasket and blast the thing with some carb and choke cleaner. Has anybody ever cleaned oneof these or do all of you millionaires just replace them. I also found two spark plugs were loose and had all carbon on the outside. I think she'll run way better after im done this weekend

I would use a coat hanger or something of that nature to push through the passages. Carb cleaner will help too. My cheap ass would buy some delete plates for $20 and just leave the egr plugged in laying on the manifold. No CEL and no more EGR issues.

Thats kinda a fire hazard and not exactly legal from an inspection perspective. The engine really needs that to run correctly anyway.

I would look to see how much a new diaphragm is and either go new or do as stated above and clean it.

Or, since it is a popular thing for "modders" to remove, you could find a used one cheap.

How is it a fire hazard? How is it illegal? How are you supposed to rebuild an egr too?

Ok, just cleaned it with some carb and choke cleaner. I depressed the diaphragm and let the cleaner run through the passage. Works perfect now. Saves 100 pesos for me.
